Finally caught one!

Mike Schwing from Md.

>These little buggers have been running all over my basement lately. I think they must have come in with one of my burl shipments. This is the Pacific Northwest Maple Burl Bug. So far, what I can tell about them is this: They appear to be made from a single, solid piece of wood with no joinery anywhere, except for the eye, which appears to look straight up (probably to avoid turner's feet). They avoid direct light, and appear to darken when exposed. This specimen is about 3" tall, not including the display stand. I have occasionally seen them taking refuge in my shavings piles, but they scatter as soon as I turn on the dust collector. Judging from the weight, I assume that the "brain" is nearly entirely empty, and when tapped on, it gives a distinct hollow sound. If anyone has more info on these, please forward it to me. I am going to capture, or at least try to capture, more. I believe I've seen a six legged one, slightly larger, over by the bandsaw.

Actually, I have NO idea what made me think to do this, but it has been in my head for quite a while. I have been thinking about learning to carve, and this was my first attempt. I cannot describe to you the glee that I felt while watching this emerge from a piece of wood, because I knew it was in my head, but I didn't know I could get it out of there. I have a LOT more ideas about where to take this. You can probably expect a whole series of them.

Comments welcomed!

>Mike, these are absolutely wild!

We discussed these pieces recently, and you were very excited about them...I'm glad you followed through on the idea.

Making pieces such as this is a great way to explore what you are really capable of making, and will lead to more ideas.

You have taken the big plunge toward a "Mike Schwing" style....a signature gouge can't be far behind!

>You were pretty fortunate Mike to capture such great specimens. I understand that less experienced hunters are unable to take them alive, and when they blow up, it is not a pretty sight! I love these, and I'm generally a very traditional thinker!!

Great job!!

>Mike this is bizzare!....I love it! Looks like something from a Hollywood movie set. Very nice....I'd say it was beautiful...but I'm not sure that's the word I need? Very unique? Creative? Wild!

It's great!

>Excellent Mike! I think I'll go with Jennifer's 'wild'. If you used Norfolk pine, you'd have a real alien on your hands. As you said, you need to define which way it's going. Is it a four legged creature in which case you would define lizard like legs or a six legged spider like creature in which case the the angles of the legs need to be more defined. Either way you've really broken a positive barrier on this piece on your quest up the woodturning ladder and finding your niche.

Fantastic! (and I really meant that). What an innovative looking piece! Nice proportions and shapre as well as some fancy carving thrown in.

Thanks for posting this.

>Cool.

I however am NOT looking forward to the Mike Schwing signature line of tools.

They'd probaby require that you be able to run a full marathon while sharpening them or some such.

Besides, the roughing gouge is still causing me grief!

Thanks everybody!

>The fact that most of the responses are very positive but not more than a line saying so is very encouraging. It tells me, I think, that nobody really knows what to think about this, but it gives them a good feeling. That is exactly what I was hoping for.

This is a direction I have wanted to head in for quite some time but was waiting till I thought my skills would allow without too much frustration.

I had intended to leave the base square, but as most turners do, we turn everything round unconsciously. Some of the crazier ideas I have are still yet to emerge and they include separating these creatures from their bases but I'm alread worried about the legs breaking. I was sure that at least one of the legs would break during shaping of this one but luck was with me. If they were free to move...well we'll see.

By the way, this has nothing to do with my secret project but it has complicated it somewhat and lengthened the timeline significantly.

I did this "carving" with the Dremel flexshaft and some Foredom carbide bits, and then a whole lot of tiny files and then some sandpaper. I have a much better carving solution on order.

Thanks again!

If this...

>has been rollin round in your head for a while then Homeland Security may want to talk to you.

If these criters are any relation to the Canadian version....be careful !!! They can cause Mad Turners Disease...there is no cure...even a trip to the Peruvian Jungle and two hours with the local (head) shrink will not do it.

People have been found walking the streets at all hours, covered in wood shavings mumbling..."I love my lathe"

BE CAREFULL!

Love it...is it house trained?

>Beautiful work Mike,

If you are going to seperate it from its base, why not try to carve the base a little more to resemble mars or some other unknown planets landscape.

>Mike

You just proved a theory that I've had for 45 years. You spent too much time in the water at Buffalo Lake in Lubbock and it effected the what you dream about when you sleep. Now, I'm going to have to try the swim or at least your ideas. I love it.
