Over the years, we’ve come across many websites containing a wealth of knowledge, experience, and information that their creators spent years building and sharing with others. Some are specialized resources that may be of interest to only a relatively small audience, but to that audience, they are invaluable.
Unfortunately, life sometimes intervenes. A site owner may become too ill to maintain a website, or pass away, leaving no one to carry on the work. Eventually, the hosting expires, the domain registration lapses, and a once-useful resource disappears. All too often, the domain is subsequently snapped up and redirected to a gambling, porn, or other unrelated commercial site.
It seems a shame that so much accumulated knowledge can be lost simply because there is no one left to keep the lights on.
We would like to offer a helping hand.
If you know of a website whose creator is no longer able to maintain it because of health, age, or passing away, we would be interested in discussing whether we might be able to host it and keep its content available.
This isn’t a business proposition. We’re not looking to buy these sites, charge their owners or families for the service, or turn someone else’s life’s work into a commercial venture. The idea is simply to preserve useful information that deserves to survive, provided we can do so responsibly and with the necessary permissions.
We recognize that every situation is different. Ownership, domain registration, technical issues, and the wishes of the original creator or their family would all need to be considered. We wouldn’t presume to take over anyone’s work without authorization.
Why do this? Because we can, and because it seems like the right thing to do.
If you know of a website facing this kind of uncertain future, please get in touch. Perhaps we can help preserve a little piece of Internet history before it disappears for good.
