If my first lathe broke for ANY reason, it was at least two days, and ususally closer to four days before Jet could get me a part, them being on the opposite side of the country and all, even with the excellent response. I could not afford that kind of down time.

So, I bought a second lathe which then became the backup machine, travel machine, demo machine, etc. I used to take it out on the patio on nice days and turn under the shade of a large tree. This was back when the shop was in the basement.

Now I still have two, the Poolewood and a Vicmarc mini. Someday I might have more, but that is a ways off - ha ha, I made a pun without even trying - ways, off, get it?

I mostly use my Powermatic 3520, which is the most versatile lathe on the planet.

I kept my old Conover that I built after watching Ed Moulthrop turn.

And I have my Jet Mini Lathe which is just for fun.

Finally, there's this lathe in my mind, the one I "gotta have". It is THE perfect lathe, which exists only in my imagination....at this point.

But I also have a Jet mini at the house that I have borrowed from a buddy so I at least have 3 lathes in the shop even if I don't own them all.

First there is lil' vicky. She's there for all small work

And then there's vick, he handles the large/long work.

On many projects I use both togther or lets say I finish a bowl on vick, I can go back to mass producing pens on vicky whill the bowl finish dries.

I use the Delta for all my dyed projects and pens, some other special items and a convient place to store one of my chucks. Both have the same spindle thread so I can swap chucks back and forth, a lot handier than a shelf.

A civilized turner simply cannot suvive with only one lathe - he must have two. There is an old saying in racing "If one's good - two's better". In fact, last night I was watching the Mike Mahoney video on using the McNaughton system and Mike was using a new Vicmarc which I would like to have.....in addition to my current ones...

About half of the club members in my woodturning club have two or more lathes. We have over 80 members, so there are a large number of us with multiple machines. You can add that number to the number of replies you get here. Besides how else can your wife turn too with only one machine...a family that turns together, stays together - and we have several of those too..

Two: 1 ShopSmith and 1 Mercury (which I prefer)
