>If price was no object we'd all own LN chisels - from what I've seen they are the best performers (and I also own some two cherries chisels).

That's the second most ridiculous thing said in this thread. There are better chisels out there for more and less money. Also more attractive to some eyes.

Pam

PS The most ridiculous thing said in this thread is the original message. A beginner goes to a beginning class, and comes out of it pontificating on which is the better chisel of three varieties. Hello, Dean, this is one of those things you'll look back on in a couple of years and laugh.

>Pam,

Thanks for the comments. Does this mean I should go off and sulk for a couple of months and not post?

>No, it absolutely does not mean that you should go away and sulk. However, it would be handy to grow up just a tad. I'm assuming that it was your instructor who told you how much better LN chisels are than non-LN, after manufacturing the situation to make sure the non-LN's appeared badly (starting with 1000 grit stone? geesh). I further assume that your instructor makes money selling LN products. You can figure it out from here.

I'd also like to hear about this great bike you've got. I love cycling, hardly ever drive a car in town anymore, always on the lookout for better wheels.

Pam, who uses mostly Japanese and antique western chisels (that means I like laminated chisels), as well as lots of German carving chisels; but does have, use, and love a small set of 2-cherries bench chisels.

No, by all means continue to post, and to read this and other woodworking information, and to use your tools, and to describe your experiences and observations. I said in my first comments that I appreciated your report and I meant it. Just look at all the discussion that has taken place with many of the posts getting over 300 hits. That's a successful thread IMO. You got people to think, and to report, and to consider, even if it was often a rebuttal (and yes, sometimes a rebuke). Information was exchanged, and much of that information was good or well written or both.

I think one of the greatest beneficiaries of this thread can be you. You posted what I think has been your first review. Well, your review has now been reviewed, and I hope you use the feedback to perfect your (hopefully) future reviews and reports of your observations. I appreciated that you shared your observations, indeed even made them in the first place, and reported them candidly. I hope some of what you have gotten out of this thread for yourself is the need to refine those observations, try to objectify some of them if you are going to present conclusions based on them, work to consider and place and report your observations within a larger context, and deliver them in a way that remains honest and yet respectful. I'm not saying you failed at these things, just saying the comments in this thread illustrate that they are important if one wants their reviews to be respected. And you know what, sometimes if you try your best to do all of those things, you'll still encounter disagreement if not rebuke. But that's what makes the world interesting and enlargers our perspective and leads us to new thoughts, techniques and findings.

I'm happy you made your post, felt I got something out of it, and hope to see many others in the future.

>... if you're not happy with 'em, then return them. We stand behind them - hardness, grinding, and overall quality.

One of the things we have no control over is how you sharpen or use them. We've found the steel to be consistently at 60-62 Rc.

Just out of interest - what was the course you took?

>Hi Dean:

No offense taken by me, but if I were the manufacturer or purveyor of one of the brands you spoke so vehemently about, I would say you had gone past objectivity and into invective. And, for many readers, that diminishes the credibililty of your review.

Words like "worthless, harpoon, lawn dart, paint can opener" convey a disdain for those products that you may or may not have intended.

I would like to get a couple samples of the chisels you compared so I can see firsthand what you mean.

Anyhow, I don't expect anecdotal reviews to pass serious editorial muster, but I would like to encourage them to be dispassionate and to give the benefit of the doubt wherever possible.

>Hi -

...no "expansion" forthcoming...privately, or publicly.

Usually, if I'm going to reply privately to a public question, I'll post a short note saying so... that way, it doesn't look like the question's gone unanswered.

I took this one as rhetorical.
