🧭 What Is Linux Mint?
Linux Mint is a free, user-friendly operating system based on Linux — similar to Windows or macOS, but open-source and community-driven. It’s designed to be easy to use, fast, and reliable — especially for people switching from Windows.
Linux Mint comes with everything you need for daily use: a web browser, office suite, music and video players, email, and more — all ready to go after installation.
It’s based on Ubuntu but uses the Cinnamon, MATE, or Xfce desktop environments. Most users choose Cinnamon for its modern, Windows-like look.
🖥️ Installing Linux Mint from Windows
You’ll need:
- A USB flash drive (at least 4 GB; 8 GB is better)
- A Windows computer with internet access
- The computer where you want to install Linux Mint
1. Download Linux Mint
Go to the official Linux Mint website:
Choose the Cinnamon Edition (recommended for most users).
As of 2025-10-09, the latest stable version is Linux Mint 22.2 “Zara”.
Download the 64-bit ISO file — it’ll look something like:
linuxmint-22.2-cinnamon-64bit.iso
💡 What’s an ISO file?
An ISO is a digital image of a DVD or installer. You’ll “burn” this file to your USB drive to create a bootable Linux Mint installer.
2. Download and Install Balena Etcher
Go to:
Click Download for Windows and install it like any other app.
💡 What is Balena Etcher?
It’s a simple tool to “flash” an ISO file to a USB drive so your computer can boot from it.
3. Create the Linux Mint USB Installer
- Plug your USB drive into your Windows computer.
⚠️ This will erase everything on the USB drive. - Open Balena Etcher.
- Click Flash from file and choose the Linux Mint ISO you downloaded.
- Click Select target and choose your USB drive.
- Click Flash!
Etcher will write the installer and verify it.
When it says Flash Complete!, your USB drive is ready to go.
4. Boot the Target Computer from the USB Drive
Now you’ll install Linux Mint on the other computer.
- Plug the USB stick into that computer.
- Turn the computer off if it’s on.
- Turn it on and immediately press the boot menu key, usually one of:
- F12 – Dell, Lenovo, Toshiba
- F9 – HP
- F8 – Asus
- Esc – Some laptops
- F2 or Del – Opens BIOS (look for “Boot Order”)
- In the boot menu, select your USB drive (e.g., “USB HDD” or “UEFI: SanDisk”).
5. Install Linux Mint
Once it boots, you’ll see the Linux Mint Welcome Screen.
You can choose “Try Linux Mint” to test it out without installing.
Or click “Install Linux Mint” to begin the full setup.
Follow the steps:
- Choose your language and keyboard layout
- Select “Erase disk and install Linux Mint” (this removes Windows)
- Set your username and password
- Click Install Now and confirm
- Wait for the installation to finish
- Restart when prompted
💡 Don’t forget to remove the USB drive when it says to, so Linux Mint boots up properly.
✅ That’s it!
Your computer is now running Linux Mint — clean, fast, and ready to use.
