Contact in Pele Country?

Anyone here "talk" to Kelly Dunn out on the Big Island in Hawaii? I seem to remember that he was located on the North end of the island, well away from the Kilauea eruption.

I saw him demo at the Utah woodturning symposium a couple of weeks ago. He said that he lived several tens of miles from the current lava flows.

Thanks, Dennis. This eruption is really devastating the South-east portion of the island.

I heard a conversation with the head of the tourism bureau trying to counteract
the impressions that the headlines and dramatic video footage is having on business. Ocean tour boats have cancelled stopping off in Kona, presumably because of smoke and volcanic ash conditions. Bookings are off something like 50%. My second figure may be way off but he said that about 10 square miles is affected by the eruption, while the island (not called BIG island for nothing) is something like 420 square miles in area. On the other major islands it is a non-factor. All islands have 20+ miles of ocean between them. Only woodturner I know of who lives in the area is John Mydock. Some turning friends recently helped move his lathe. John at least has his priorities straight ;-). I believe he will still be in Portland in a couple of weeks.
