If your hollowing bowls with it tilted in that direction you are going against the grain. Well I should say that it would be incorrect for an side grain bowl. If it's an end grain and your turning from the center out that would be the correct angle and should cut cleanly. If it's a side grain bowl you should be cutting from the outside in and that would be the wrong angle on that cutter. It would need to be tilted about 45 degrees to the right for hollowing a side grain bowl.

Guess I didn't understand after all. What I tried was disastrous. I'm going to give up and use my 3/8" bowl gouge. At least I understand that.

I felt that way about my computer yesterday. I went out and shoveled dirt for the rest of the day. I know how a shovel works. And when it jammed up with mud a good wack on the ground it was back working again. Can't do that with the computer.

When hollowing a bowl with that rig you would have to be on the bevel of the cutter to control it. It's not radically different than my Hunter Hercules in how it works as a bevel rubbing tool. Go to this video at the 4 minute mark and you can see how I'm hollowing as a bevel rubbing tool. Before that you can see how I hollow with the cutter facing up. The Hercules does have the cutter tilted forward at 30 degrees. I don't think yours is tilted that far forward if at all and would probably get catches when hollowing with it flat. I have a tool that has a forward tilt of 15 degrees and it works OK in my captured bar system but is grabby when hand held. 30 degrees is better.

I just consider the Hunter cutter as if it is the nose of a bowl or spindle gouge and use the same bevel-rubbing cuts (but different if scraping).
