Subaru commercial *LINK*

George Wurtzel who is a blind woodworker and turner is in this subaru commercial. I met George in Minneapolis when I demoed up there. He took the class I taught the next day. What an incredible guy. I remember he came in and said "give me the lathe with most light". What was really outstanding, he missed my demo on turning pendants the night before. Came to the dinner afterwords and asked me how I did them. He brought 2 in the next morning and they were perfect with absolutely no sanding scratches. Here is the commercial.

My grandfather was blind. As a kid, I tried to use my most silent, stealth movements to get close to him......he always sensed me......never could fool him.

How do you make your pendants? Would you give us a quick overview of your method if possible.

Very brief instructions. I use double stick tape and tape the pendant blank to a 1 1/2" by 2" scrap of wood. I remove 2 jaws from my chuck so I can grab that piece of wood by the long sides. Now I turn the pendant round. then I loosen the jaws of the chuck and move the block up or down so that I can turn either lines in the pendant off center or turn a hole off center. You can also tilt the wood out in the jaws to make the pendant tapered from top to bottom. Quite often I do both. tilt it out and up and make a slice across the wood. Them move it down and out the same amount and cut another slice across the wood on the opposite side. Unlimited possibilities.

I also built a copy of the Ruth Niles pendant jig that adds even more possibilities.
