I've not seen this unit.....it does look expensive.....given the asking price of their mini lathe this product line is for those living in tall cotton.

I'd like to see how they pick up dust at the source.....what are the fittings like at the lathe??

Thanks for the links, Roger. It's interesting technology, but it's not a lot more efficient than a good cyclone with a decent canister filter. I could see a commercial shop getting it, but only if it had the capacity to handle several stationary machines at once. It doesn't. With 1,100 cfm, it doesn't move enough air to work be set in the corner of the shop, connected to a series of ducts covering an entire shop. Even with all the gates closed except for the one machine that's in use, the airflow is insufficient for long duct runs. So, that means you'll need to move the machine from machine to machine. For $4k, most hobbyists would expect to be able to move enough air to run ducts to each machine. Yes, such a large system would make more noise -- but that's not a problem if the dust collector is in its own room.

Like their lathe, Harvey has some cool technologies on offer. I just don't think most woodworkers will find their tools produce enough additional benefit for their high price. For their sake, and ours, I hope I'm wrong.

The 'dust processor' has a 6" diameter inlet. It comes with a Y that allows a standard 4" and a standard 2" hose to be connected at the same time. That means it can handle one machine at a time -- which is what you'd expect from a machine with 1,100 CFM.

When I looked at getting serious about my dust collecting It became fairly apparent that you can't really collect the really fine dust and you need a lot of cfn to collect even the medium fine dust. When I looked into the Cyclone systems they were just beyond my budget and you had to add more money if you wanted to collect the really fine dust. It became apparent pretty quickly that the best way was to buy the biggest unit you could and then buy a good dust mask to wear for the really fine dust. I couldn't justify $4000 no matter what.

With a cyclone dust collector and a .5 micron filter, you can collect a very high percentage of fine dust. And for about 1/2 the price of the video machine.

Well, I did see this one a while back. Overengineered to me. They claim that the standard 2 stage system is 'very complicated', which it is not. Actually very simple, and efficient.

The fine dust in my collector is outside

I probably have $800 in my dust collection system. I bought a used 2400 cfm doubke bag grizzly dust collector. The machine is in a shed outside my shop so all the fine dust just blows.out the cracks.in the wall.

If you replace the filter bag(s) on your Grizzly with a canister filter, the CFM will go up. (The air flow improves because the pleated paper filter in the canister has more surface area for the air to pass through, which reduces the resistance to air flow.) It's a relatively inexpensive way of increasing the performance of a dust collector.

Basically the design is a high tech.......

......version of a horizontal cyclone. I doubt there will be a ready market among turners, but there may be other optional markets that can justify the expense.

A low cost system that can't pull chips through the ducts and doesn't hold the fine dust isn't a deal in my book. Aren't you concerned about loosing heated shop air in the cold season? When you place the system outside of the shop, it creates a lower pressure in the shop and it will draw outside air through the cracks. Maybe it's not that cold by you.

Dick. Thus system wo4ks.better 5han any i have had up til now. It pulls most.of the dust away from.my face. Nothing i have.tried will pull chips flying from the lathe. The chips in the duct work.was minimal.ant thats after 2 years of hard work. I dont notice any loss of heat in my shop. I thought that might be an issue but it isnt. I talked to 2 other local turners who have.their dust collectors outside and they dont have a problem either.

My dust collector is inside, but I vent outside. I only have about $800 in my entire system including a used Jet 3hp DC. I use to vent inside at my old shop using a Wynn filter and a Thien separator. When I built my new shop I wanted to vent outside. The Thien works well, but not good enough for venting outside. I bought the large cyclone from eBay. If venting outside this is the better then installing filters IMO. No filters to clog or clean. The cfm is the same every time you turn it on. There is no visable dust outside as this cyclone works extremely well. Heat is not a problem. I have gable vents the entire length and up to the roof peaks. No ridge vent. I also installed a 12' drop ceiling. What air doesn't leak through my overhead door comes from the ceiling above containing heat I have lost. I left a 2" gap in one end and some holes from hanging things. The shop is 30' X 50' and has in-floor heat. I have run my system for hours at a time with no noticeable change in temperature. I feel I have a system that is very good for much less the cost of a commercial system.

My DC is outside the shop in an outdoor closet. So whatever it sucks up is in the drum or the filter or lost to the environment including the heat.

I run my DC when the tools are on. I have micro-switches on the blast gates that control the DC. I have not noticed any significant heat loss. The shop is semiheated with a little barn heater.

The fact is that most of the heat is stored in the drywall, tools and other heavy mass and not in the air. So running the DC intermittently does not suck out as much heat as you might think. Also, in my case, I have a dog door and when the DC is on, it opens and air flows in and to the DC, leaving the rest of the air in the shop undisturbed.
