A few weeks back, I asked for opinions of the Beall Collet Chuck and the PSI Apprentice Collet Chuck.

Since that time, I've been doing some research on those products and other alternatives. It became apparent that most of the available choices came entirely or mainly from China. So, after watching numerous YouTube machinist videos that featured collet chucks using a MT2, I began to look at products from China that fit my needs.

I came across the following set on Ebay.....


The set comes with a spanner wrench, 11 ER32 collets, MT2 chuck, and a storage case (drawbar is shop made). So far.....so good. Time will tell if the quality is there.....machinists in those videos seemed satisfied with this level of tooling.

Just another choice to be explored if you are thinking of getting a collet chuck.

It looks nice. The only drawback to this type of collet chuck is the inability to feed a long dowel through the headstock. If you’re making a number of the same type of item, such as perches for birdhouse ornaments, feeding the stock through they tailstock can be efficient.

That's true.....if you want to feed a long dowel thru the collet for repeat turning of a component, then the Beall or PSI collet works well. The Beall and PSI collets would also be easier to install and remove from the lathe.....don't have to be using a drawbar.

But, there are advantages to the MT shank type collet chucks as well. They can be used on any lathe with a similar Morris taper without regard to size of spindle thread.....price.....and added numbers of collets sold with this type of collet chuck.

Another advantage of this type of collet chuck is that it can be used in the tailstock. I use my MT2 collets for drilling with Forstner bits.

Roger, thanks for posting this.

I would also like a link or hints on what to search for to find these.

I've been wanting a set of collets I can use on the wood lathe. I have a quality set for my milling machine but the holder is R8. It seems to me that even collets that are not the top of the line would be quite useful for the wood lathe.

John.....I hope this doesn't violate any policy.....but I'll post what I did.....

Go to Ebay and enter in search.....ER32 collet set - manufacturing & metalwork.....

A number of sets will come up in both MT2 & MT3.....this particular set I got sold out.....so it is not being shown now.....but, I'm assuming when the retailer in California gets more sets from China, it will be back on.....

I thought the same as you.....even though this is not a premium set, it will serve well for wood turning.
