Does anyone here have a functional tailstock for an old 12" Delta lathe that they would sell......need one for a friend who has been unable to get his old one to eject the live center when backing out...can't seem to find parts....thanks....Mac Ray
I would disassemble the tailstock to remove the center which is stuck.try using another #2 morse taper tool which has a longer tail. I have a center that won't bump out, I inserted a Allen head screw into the end of the center,the head of the Allen screw will make the tool longer. Paul
That was my thought. It might not be self ejecting or the center put in may be too short. If there is a protruding area between the center and the Quill try putting a screw driver or some other tapered tool in there and tap on it to see if it will knock the live center out. I've had to knock out drive centers on lathes where it was stuck using that method.
If you can remove the tailstock quill and pour break fluid down the shaft let it sit and penitrate you can also use a heat gun to expand the metal and tap it with a brass hammer to help loosen the parts. If this was/is not a self extracting system there would/should be a slot to insert a removal key. When (if) it is removed insert a 3/8 x 1/2 slug prior to reinserting the center. Be sure to clean the inside and remove all the rust.
The old Delta tail stocks are self ejecting (as far as I know).....there is no accommodation for a knockout bar.....but, the live center has to have a long enough MT2 shank to work....to be self ejected.
Otherwise, the suggestion to use some sort of screw driver or other form of a wedge between the live center body and the tail stock as you are backing the quill/live center into the tail stock will work.....it doesn't take much to break the live center free when doing this.
Hopefully, we are not talking about a situation where these parts have sat together for years and years and have rusted/fused.
Given the fact that there were so many of these old Delta 12" lathes made.....and that they are not held in high regard by today's lathe standards, replacement parts should be available.
