>Hi Ted,
Here is one of mine. It is a very simple rack that is close to the lathe. It tilts back a little bit at the top to keep everything in place.
I also have a rolling cart that I use next to the lathe to hold the tools I am using while at the lathe. I will post a pic of that one too.
Best wishes,
Dave

>Ted - check out some additional photos and details in my photo album in Tools & Jigs at the link below. I have recently added a side shelf to store a Oneway Coring set on the Roll around drawer unit. After almost three years I am still very pleased with the way these work for me. The rack on the left has since been moved to a 4x4 post and I call it my Project Oriented Stand. Holds six tools and other odds & ends for any particular project underway.

I was just thinking, after seeing Carole's and Dave's pics "How do they work in such a sterile work area?" I'm delighted when I actually find the tool I want picking through the wood chips while turning! : )

I have way too many tools. In my new place I have a steel tool cabinet about the size of Russ's tool table. I'm going to do something like Russ did to hold tools on the side but probably 2 layers deep. On the back I'm going to make a stair stepped kind of tool rack that will hold 3 layers deep. All the rest of the tools will go in a drawer.
I'm hoping the top of the tool cabinet will hold the tools I'm actually working with at the moment.

I have dust collection and an air cleaner, but I couldn't get my shop this clean with a fire hose. Congratulations, I think.
For tool storage I have a 5' window above the lathe and I extended the sill and cut in a bunch of slots in the edge and a row behind them. My portable planer serves as a roll around cart and there are six drawers in the cabinet under the lathe. No picture though, because I don't have the magic dust filter lens for my camera. I make bowls, but more shavings than anything.

If you saw my first few pieces, turned at David Ellsworth's, you'd realize just how right you are...

Actually, its a 12-step... the first 10 steps are to by 10 new tools you'd really like to have, and the last 2 steps are explaining this to your spouse and the credit card company !

>Here's another approach to a tool storage rack for "ready use" tools. There are two views, both on and off the lathe, and the rack is held in place by gravity and hooks between the stand and the lathe bed. Each level of the rack holds eight tools, with the upper rack having slots for centers, tommy-bars, knock-out bar, and wrenches for the lathe. The points of all the tools are down behind barriers to protect them. (The idea of all those sharp edges poking up into the air didn't appeal to me.) The lathe is a Delta 46-700 and the red wall behind the tool rack is the ballast box with 185 lbs of sand in it, which does a very good job of dampening vibration and renders the lathe all but un-tippable.
Finally, the top bar makes a good handle if I need to move the tools somewhere else.

Hi Barry, I think that pretty much describes mine as well! Some of these tool storage pics have really great ideas, I just cannot keep anything that clean!!!

Ted,
Last year at about this time, I asked the same questions you did. I ended up fabricating a wall rack to hold all my lathe tools.
When used in conjunction with a rolling tool cart, this works great. The tool cart has a 48" long x 18" wide counter top where I can lay my tools out and they'll be right where I can just reach for them. Before starting a project, I select the tools I think I'll need and place them on the counter.

See ya around,
Dominic

Your right. I had a temporary lapse in judgement. I probably need to buy another tool to cure that problem.

>I have a choice.
1) Make a tool holder
2) Turn
I'd rather turn.
About 12 years ago I recieved a B&D Workmate as a gift. When I started turning I found that it was the perfect table to hold my tools. I find that the wood shavings help prevent the tools from rolling off.

>This is what I've done for my VL100. I really like the tools in their holster at the side for easy draw and return [yes I own a hand gun]. There are two drawers in the front and shelves below. I take this to the IAW [Israel association of woodturners] for demos or other turners to use along with other demos I do around Israel.
I can't do the same for my VL300 so I bought myself a large metal tool cabinet on wheels for that and use the top to lay out the tools while working.
