8" Slow Speed Grinder

>Just received the latest flyer from Woodcraft and notice they have their 8" slow speed grinder on sale. Does anyone out there use or are familar with this grinder and care to share their thoughts on it. I'm still not sold on Taiwan manufactured product, are the grinding wheels offshore as well?

>Had one for about five years and it's fine. Mine has 3/4 thick wheels, a friend got one with 1" wheels. That would be a little better if they are available. Not very powerful, but it doesn't matter. Sharpening lathe tools is more like polishing than grinding.

>Bruce,

I have their 2 speed grinder (1750 and 3400 rpm), and love the grinder. Man, when I swith to the 3400 option though the grinder really takes off! Scares the hell out of me especially when one of the stones is out of round. I find that it shakes the whole house. ( I have my grinder attached to a lolly column in the basement). You can't go wrong with their grinders in my opinon. No affiliation but just a satisfied customer.

>I have one and love it. All the newer ones should have the 1" wide wheels which are far superior to the 3/4 in ones. It cost almost as much to replace the two wheel as buying the grinder with them already installed.

>I picked the slow speed grinder up when it was on sale at Woodcraft a couple months ago. I have not had any problems with it. It does everything I need it to do. I use it for buffing with my Beall buffing system on one side and my Wolverine Sharpening system on the other. This si the first grinder I have had so cannot compare it to anything else, but again, it does everything I need it to to and does it well. I would buy it again.

>I'm a newbie, but I have some experience with this grinder. I learned of a 10% store-wide sale, purchased it, had it shipped ($9 to ship it - not bad at all for the weight). As soon as I opened the box, there's a flyer laying on top of items on sale, which includes the grinder. So I spent $85 and should have spent $75. Woodcraft took care of that - very much to their credit.

All the hardware for the grinder is metric, which I understand, but I don't like. I'm almost 40, and I'll make a great old man when my time comes.

There were two problems with my grinder. First, one of the tool rests was not threaded all the way through, therefore it was not possible to attach it. Yeah, I'll get a jig setup at some point, but not right now, so I want the tool rests in the interim. Second, when I turned it off, and it slowly stopped, I could hear something on the left side that almost sounded like paper going chiiiick, chiiiick, chiiiick, with each revolution. I called Woodcraft customer service. In one phone call: 1) said they would issue the credti for the extra $10, 2) said a replacement grinder would be on the way the next day, and 3) would send me a label with which to return the defective grinder, and fedex would come to my door to pick it up. I set up the new grinder over the weekend - it came within two or three days.

Conclusion - I think the grinder will work out ok. I'm displeased at the problems I had, but pleasantly surprised at the level of response I got from woodcraft - the speed and completeness of their response. If you have a problem, my advice is to call their corporate customer service and bypass the store.

I guess this is a long post, but for once I was able to add something to the conversation and not just ask questions.

>I have used one for 14 months now. Works great. The only negative, the wheels were terribly out of round when new. I removed nearly 1/4 inch on both and now only require light touch up's. It has proven to be a great purchase.

>Thanks to one and all for the information and your experiences. The faulty threads that someone experienced is a pitty but no doubt was repaired with a thread tap of the proper size. Myself I will be removing my Wolverine Grinding attachments from my high speed grinder and installing them on this slow speed one. Well I best get on the telephone and see if Woodcraft will ship one to me. I certainly woodcraft seem to be a great company to deal with, much the same kind of satisfaction one gets when dealing with Lee Valley here in Canada.

Thanks again,

>I bought one of those in April of 2000. I turn pretty close to 6-7 hrs a day and approx 5 - 6 days a week and it has never failed me. I highly recomend this one.
