If I Only Had a Brain (that fit)

Mike Schwing from Md.

>Finally! First off let me say that I did not intend to paint the brain. I had only intended to give it a little color by adding some toner to the lacquer. Late last night, when I should have not been in the shop, I dumped some transparent red into the airbrush, and before I realized what I had done, I had painted the base! It looked horrible. So I painted it in black and then transparent red on top. It looks odd, but kind of neat, too. I'm OK with it but it wasn't what I had intended.

The pattern on the bug was done by carefully folding wire mesh around the body and head, and then spraying translucent paints of various colors, and then applying a charcoal black over top with the mesh removed. The whole thing was sprayed with a water based lacquer. The interior of the head, it can now be revealed, is carved with veins and colored black, blue and purple, to show that he has no brain. I saved the cutout from the top of his head and it is on the floor beneath him.

I _was_ going to submit this to the AAW jury for the Kansas City Symposium exhibit with the Wizard of Oz theme, but now that I painted the base I'm not so happy with it. Hopefully you can change my mind. There are a bunch more pics as additional posts to this one. Please put your comments, if you have any, here on this post to keep them in some sort of order. I would love feedback, of any sort.

This was the most intense thing I ever worked on. The whole thing stands about 14" tall and is made from one single piece of silver maple - not a good choice for this type of work. The head was turned first and then the rest was carved, shaped, sanded, and painted.

Glad it is done!

>Quite remarkable, very creative and obviously very time consuming! Good luck! I hope these bugs do not turn up in my shop as they have in yours....

I would enter it. All they can do is say no. That is unless you have something better. I think it fits the theme and certainly is unique and well done. Good job. I won't be able to build my Scarecrow to go with the tinman. The deadline is the 15th and I just barely have my shop operational. John

>Mike, enter it. This is fantastic. I though it was scary when it was in plain wood. With the color added, it is terrifying. I just hope I don't find one in my shop!

>Hi Mike,

I like it much more now than I did before. Excellent detail and I really like the wire screen effect making scales on the bug. I'd definitly hand it in. If there would be one thing I would change, it would be possibly lightly touching the high spots of the brain with either a red a few shades lighter or a pinkish red. While it's fine as it is, this would enhace the brain area with out distracting from the bug. [just my 2 shekels worth]

All the best,

Ron

WOW.

>Mike, That is the most original, well executed, bizarre piece I've ever seen come near a lathe.

-----------ENTER IT-------

I'd offer to buy it, both as an artistic piece & as inspiration for what a healthy mix of imagination, technique, and whimsy can produce BUT--I'm a poor boy after getting my 3520 :-)

>Hi Mike,

First of all I definitely think you should enter it. Don't let this one go. I love the wire mesh treatment....it really works great! Looks like he has scales or something? Creepy looking for sure. The painted brain in my opinion looks a little "flat". I know nothing about air brushing so I have no idea what it would take to do some highlighting on the nooks and crannies...but if you could some how give them more depth I think it might add something to it? Over all I think it is a great work of imagination and execution. For being a turner first and then a carver....you have done incredibly well with this. The undertaking of carving alone is amazing. Bravo Mike! I can't wait to see him in person in Kansas. Does his head double as a candy dish? Ha!

Jennifer

PS: There was a box on my doorstep Friday. Thank you! :)

>Incredible Mike - your'e moving a heck of a lot faster than I am! Really nice work; I'm nto sure I'm into brainless bugs, as a personal preference, but the thought process and execution is great. And the painted brain is a no issue to me. Keep it up!

>Incrediable, i would never imagine such a beast. I vote for you enter it for sure. Is there any way to make the brain portion wet or gooy looking?

Title could be "Thinking outside the box"

Best of luck buddy

Go For It!!!!

Tom in Red Deer

>I adree with the others...enter it. Would your other one fit with it as a group? The word "Evolution" comes to mind.

Very unique and different. I also agree with the idea of trying to spiff up the brain. It does look a tad flat compared to the rest of the piece.

Regardless....ENTER IT !!!!

By all means, enter the piece. It won't get in for sure if you don't enter it.

If only your talents were used for good!

John Trant (Baltimore/DC area)

>Just kidding Mike ... It is great! I would definitely enter it into the AAW contest.

I agree with Jennifer in that the bug is exquisitely detailed (painting and carving) but the brain looks like it did not receive the same attention. Can you air brush black into the crevices and spectral highlights on the ridges? How about a few blood vessels, bug/worm holes (with a bug peeking out), or other point of interest? Merely suggestions.

Excellent work. Keep it up!!

John
