Silly Survey

Barry Irby

>There have been a couple of surveys about dust colletors and shop size.

What I want to check on is how many of you have done silly things like trying to blow the dust off your favorite bowl gouge while you still had your face sheild on over your face? More than once?

Have you glued your fingers together or to a turning with CA? Do you keep the release handy for such occasions?

Spent a while looking for your skew and couldn't find it because you were carrying it around in your hand?

Tried to answer the phone still wearing your ear protectors? I wear the shooters muffs type. Makes it really hard.

Worn your turning smock to the store?

What else?

Fess up.

>Just last week, I was piecing together some scraps of veneer to make a larger piece for a bowl. I was straightening up the edges on the belt sander. One of the pieces had a little dried Hot Hide Glue on it from a previous bowl. While working with one piece on the sander, I held that piece in my lips. Well, the moisture from my lips softened glue just enough to bond the glue to my lips, and when I grabbed it, it tore a piece of skin off my lips. Boy, that smarted!!!

Should this go in the silly survey thread or unsafe practices?

>Gosh which story do I tell. I'm really bad about leaving pencils everywhere. I can never find them so I get another one out of the drawer. By the end of the day I have a pencil on every machine.

Then there's the time I glued the CA bottle to my lip while trying to blow the little bit that always sticks in the tip out.

Sneezed one time with the faceshield on. Sorry I gave you that visual but it happens.

>Hi Barry,

I don't know how many times I've tried to blow dust off something while still wearing my face shield. I laugh at myself every time I do it!

How about when hollowing out a vessel, looking inside to check for shavings and blowing in the compressed air at the same time? Not that I have done that. More than once. On the same piece :)

Good thread,

Mike

>Dave

I had that happen in the last class I was teaching. A student asked for help and I went over and tried her gouge. It wasn't cutting so I sharpened it for her. It still wasn't cutting. I tried several times probably looking flustered, then I noticed she had hit the reverse switch.

>Got some new radio headphones, but couldn't find them. Knew I had them a moment ago. I KNOW they're right here. Oh well, I'll turn the volume up on the radio while I sand with the shop vac on.

Shutting down for the day, I turned the radio off and heard someone talking...

It was coming from around my neck. Du-u-u-u-h-h-h.

By the way - LOVE those headphones.

Triton Warning & CA glue

>Yes, I glued my fingers together Monday. Yes, I keep a bottle of solvent handy.

I also recently bought a Triton respirator-- helmet supplied with air from a belt unit. Love it. How do I put this delicately?? DO NOT have a big Mexican dinner with lots of refried beans the evening before using your Triton.

>Hi Barry

I could write a book on dumb stuff done in my shop, and it would all have me as the main character! But the first thing you mentioned, trying to blow dust off the tool through a face shield, I can safely say is a universal phenomenon. I have had many many people through my shop and in other teaching venues over the years, and I cannot think of a single person (including myself) who has NOT done this. In fact, I have gotten to the point where I watch for it so I can tell the victim (after I get done laughing) that they are now a member in the club of those who blow through their face shields! The best ones are the ones who get all excited and blow two or three times, harder each time, like they just aren't moving enough air to do the job. The look of realization that comes over each face is a joy to behold. I am laughing now as I type this. None of us are immune. In fact, I will often reassure the person du jour that there are only two types of turners - those who try to blow dust off through their face shields and liars!

The good news is, I know I'm consistent, I do this just about every time I turn.

Actually cleans metal tables pretty well.

>At the risk of admitting to occasional laxes of safety...

When I put something on the faceplate or chuck (I have a 4 jaw independant knuckle breaker that I rarely use and regret purchasing, but that's another story) I like to make sure that it is reasonably well balanced before I really start working on it. So after screwing on the chuck of faceplate, I turn the lathe on, let it get up a little speed and turn it back off to see if it wobbles. A couple of times I had failed to tighten well enough and the chuck kept spinning after I turned the lathe off, unscrewed and chased me around the garage.

When gluing up strakes on my little sailboat, I over extended myself and equipment on one stretch and had a spring clamp where I really needed something more solid. Sure enough, it started to separate a little bit so I tried fidgeting with it and it popped off. Thinking fast, I pushed down at that spot and did it quickly enough to keep anything else from shifting. It's hard to explain, but this was sort of a "domino" situation where there was likely to be additional problems if I walked away and spent time coming up with a better solution. I was using epoxy with a mix of hardeners that only took about an hour to harden sufficiently to hold strakes in place. It was a very long hour!

>The first time I used a knock out bar to remove a spur drive from the headstock, I drew blood by catching the drive in my hand. That in itself might be considered an accident. What's silly is that after four years of turning, I occasionally make that same mistake.

OT Wheich Headphones?

>Which radio head phones do you have? I tried a pair of those Bose Quite Comfort 2 ones. The seemed to cut the noise by ten or twenty percent with the active noise cancellation thng, but I was unimpressed. At least not impressed $300 worth.

I feel like a character in a rock opera. I get the dust mask, the face sheild, the head phone/ shooters muffs on and a glove on my left hand. That deaf, dumb and mostly blind guy sure turns a mean pin ball. If you wear a activated chatcoal filter you can't even smell or taste what you are doing. Splendid isolation.
