>All very interesting! Thanks for doing the tweeking e. Gives me lots to think about. Now I'll have to play with them some more. Russ I kind of like the no collar idea too, however the raw opening is 2 1/2" diameter, and it is not attractive. I'll post the finalized version when completed.

>Actually, Molly, I like the approach you used in separating the collar from the curve of the vessel, but it would be a smoother and, IMHO, more appealing transition, if it was just a bit more than a detail line, raised, but not as much as it is now, and the curve either mimicked and followed the vessel curve, or was shaped like Wally's above the transition line. Yours may be a bit too "domed" and contrasts with the general lines of the piece. Although I really like a smooth transition such as Wally posted on different colored woods, I think yours would benefit from a definite but not too pronounced lip, for lack of a better word, to distinguish the different areas of interest.

Overall, another of the fine pieces we have come to expect from you.

Nice job!

Re: Explanation/Questions?

>Imagine the collar removed from this piece with just the unaltered "entry hole" (the hole used for hollowing) at the top . As Molly said, this entry hole is about the same diameter as this collar (otherwise, she could replace it with a smaller diameter collar).

Now, look at the visible profile of the vessel body. This profile curves as it approaches the entry hole and ends (when it reaches the entry hole) at an angle of about 30 or 40 degrees to horizontal. That's the angle that I am talking about - the angle of the vessel body's profile with respect to horizontal.

If the vessel was flatter at the top - maybe 5 degrees from horizontal, it would be (to me at least) better for adding a collar.

Also, if the entry hole was smaller in diameter and the upper curve of the vessel body continued to flatten out as it neared the hole, then it would also be better.

By the way, I agree with whoever suggested that one of the problems was that the collar was large in diameter compared to the diameter of the body - but I think this angle question is also critical to getting a good-looking collar.

I hope that clarified it for you.

>Molly,

First, I love the dragonflies and the touch of color is awesome.....and original!

I've read all the responses to the collar issue and, since the opening is so large and you do need a collar, first trim it down (thin it) then do one or two baby dragonflies that come off the vase onto the collar. Sort of an on-purpose diversion?

>How about at the point of transition between collar and vessel, you roll a bead? Then continue up to the orifice with a more concave approach.

>Just a thought here, but if the piece has too large a mouth to work well as hollow form with collar then why not consider making it a covered vessel with a lid and finial?

>Bob,

I was thinking along the same lines, but than realized that with the Dragonfly motiff it would work well as a lidded vessel. By putting something such as Cattails in the vase the Dragonflys would look to be in place, and out of place in a lidded vessel IMO.

This is is a very interesting design deliemma and I'm enjoynf the idea. Of all the pics of different collars posted I really didn't see one that really seemed to fit this piece. Might have to do a minor change to the overall shape of the vase.

Molly, this is the second piece of yours that I have seen, and barring the collar, (which did detract) I think this an absolutly wonderful piece. Gonna have to keep an eye on you for sure.
