Another Dragonfly piece

Molly Winton

>I've titled this Spirit Flight (personal meaning). It stands 7 1/2" tall, and is 5 1/2" diameter. It was the UGLIEST maple hollow form I've ever made prior to burning it. The wood was very blah with very unattractive spalting. I decided to give it a go with relief burning since most of it would be charred. This is a great way to use nondescript or ugly wood. The dragonflies are colored with Prismacolors, and then acrylic sparkle paint (not obvious in this photo). In person the sparkle makes the dragonflies similar to their own real irridescence. I've yet to put a finish on it.

>Molly this is awesome. You have moved up a notch with this one, and you were already high on the list! I don't know what it looked like at first, but the finished product is superb. I love the coloring and the style, and I can't imagine how long it took to create all of that detail. Super work!

I love it. I like the color of the background. You could have fun with that, morning sky, evening sky. I like the coloring on the dragon flies. I'm partial to dragon flies. I had one land on my handlebars when I was riding my bike. We rode together for about a mile before it flew off. What a great memory. John

Critique on collar please

Molly Winton

>Thanks for your comments guys. I do have a request for a critique though. When posted on WoW, a few folks thought the collar sits too high and detracts from the overall piece. If you would comment on this I would appreciate it.

>Okay Molly....You've done a wonderful job of texturing and the form is good, but I feel that the collar is sort of a lump and detracts from your otherwise great piece.

Oh, and get Jamie to help with your camera work.

Uhhh...Still friends?

Maybe if it were a concave shape instead of convex.

>Hi Molly,

What a wonderful piece. You have a vision that results in some very beautiful and inspiring work. I am always impressed by the methods people find to creativley display their own visions, you have a unique talent. Thank You for showing us your work.

take care,

Jim

>Good heavens, yes we're still friends. Isn't that what friends are for? I'm struggling with this collar. Can you give me your thoughts on what might be better? Should it not be as high? I can't make it narrower, due to the size of the form opening. Should I make it flatter with a slight concavity, as suggested? I think I'll try a couple other styles and see what I like. I don't want it to detract from the main form, but it to have a elegant, finished look. Thanks Wally (and Mike, in your own words!).

>Hi Molly, great work !

I agree -- I like the HF a lot, Molly, but the collar does detract somewhat. My very first impression about the collar was that it seemed pretty large, and that a sharp step and a concave curve might compliment your excellent work better.

The collar shape and style will help create a desired look; either fun, light and whimsical, or more formal. I'd like to see a few different collar shapes on this to compare.

Safe spinning,

>Molly I agree that it looks lumpy on top. Would it be possible to make a top that continues the form. Perhaps you could put a small decorative V between the top and the rest of the form and then decorate the lid portion above the V notch so it looks like a purposeful change in design. Then you could leave a small hole in the tip to appear that it was hollowed through that hole. John

>If in doubt, remove it. This piece can survive perfectly well without the collar.

Just another opinion from someone who thinks that most collars detract, rather than add.

>My take on it, Molly, is that it's very difficult to get a nice looking collar when the sides meet the entry hole at such a steep angle. Try some drawings - maybe you can come up with a good solution, but I haven't been able to do it. (Not that I've tried that much.) Wally's example and other nice collared pieces that I've seen approach the horizontal as they approach the entry hole. I don't think you want them to be exactly horizontal (in general), but maybe up to 10 or so degrees from horizontal.

Explanation/Questions?

Jennifer@Indy.USA

>Art (or anybody),

I'm not quite clear on what exactly you mean here? When you say.... "the sides meet the entry hole at such a steep angle" ....are you talking about the outer curve of the collar....or are you referring to the sides of the actual hole going into the vessel? Also when you say... "nice collared pieces that I've seen approach the horizontal as they approach the entry hole"...could you explain this? Are you talking about putting a horizontal flat on the edges of the collar? I struggle with almost every collar I make and would love to understand more what Art is talking about here....as I do admire both his and Wally's collars! I guess you could say I have collar envy :)

Thanks!

Jen
