Nova vacuum attachment

Frank

>Has anyone had success getting the standard handwheel mounted Nova vacuum attachment (made for shopvac) to seal sufficiently to use with a vacuum pump? Have tried various permutations of gaskets, glue, etc. but the pump doesn't seem to have enough flow to overcome the leaks. is there an answer or should I just give up and buy a ez vacuum attachment?

thanks, frank

I've been using that Nova adaptor for years with a standard Vacuum pump. I tried a dust collector but my dust collector didn't work very well. I did have a leak where the bearing goes into the handwheel. I bought some thin closed cell foam at my local hobby store and cut out a circle to fit the opening. Then punched a 3/8" hole in the center. I put this in the handwheel and then put the bearing in. It seals nicely. John

>I first plugged the extra holes in the body by tapping them and putting in set screws coated with Loctite. The bearing itself I seated against the handwheel with a thin coat of automotive red gasket seal between them. This has worked fine for me for a couple of years.

I used to use the Oneway vacuum adapter which is a great adaptor, but didn't work with the DVR handwheel, which is why I switched to the Nova version. Both have worked as effectively and reliably as the other.

>I also plugged the extra holes but with CA. Then I wrapped it with duct tape. I use a piece of 1" plastic tubing with the reinforcement threds in it to go to the pump. The duct tape is used to match the inside diameter of the the tubing with the outside of the adapter. I used an "O" ring slipped over the adapter and firmly pushed against the bearing to seal off the bearing leak. When I want to use the vaccum pump I slip the tubing over the tape wrapped adapter. Occasional rewraping is necessary. A bit "Rube Goldberg erish" but has worked for about wo years. Oh be careful when you tighten the set screw in the wheel that holds the bearing. Too much force will squash the bearing race. I know I did it.

I forgot to mention that I had the handwheel for my Powermatic 2035 bored to take the same bearing as my Nova handwheel. Now I use it also for the vacuum system.

>that the internal bore of the Nova Vacuum adapter is just the right size to be easily tapped to take a standard stepped air fitting. Makes it a lot easier to securely attach hoses.

>Thanks everyone. Think I'll give it one more try tomorrow since it seems like at least half got it working. if no luck the Woodworking Show is in town this weekend and will pickup a EZ Vac from Craft Supplies.

Just looked into the same question

>and went to the Teknatool Nova users forum. There's a thread on this subject and it reflects the info given here, i.e. the bearing leaks and badly.

As a result, I decided to keep my OneWay Rotary Adaptor and have ordered a new insert for it.

Cheers, Garrett

>Welcome back Garrett.

I used the Oneway vacuum adapter for a couple of years, first on a Nova 3000, then for a while on the DVR. My only complaint was that in that configuration it replace the handwheel, and I didnt' feel it had sufficient diameter of its own to make for a desirable substitute. That's when I decided to go with the Nova vacuum adapter that I had had around for several years but never used. For me, the Nova allows me to pull the same maximum vacuum the Oneway did, to use the DVR handwheel, and it actually runs cooler at very high speed than the Oneway.

Hearing the reports of you and the others, I am convinced that my success has come from seating the bearing in the handwheel with an intermediary layer of automotive gasket compound. That likely seals the bearing, as well as the area around the bearing. I've used this configuration for two years now, and it has worked perfectly.

I still have my Oneway adaptor, but doubt I will ever use it again in this configuration, simply because I really like having a full sized handwheel. I used to think about trying to epoxy a larger piece of wood onto it, but never got around to trying this when the Nova adaptor worked out OK (for me ).

>Please note that this adapter is not sold as a high vacuum adaptor .It is designed for use with a vacuum cleaner as a vacuum source. I tried the vacuum cleaner and was disappointed with the results, next I tried with an old worn out Robinair 3CMF oil bath pump. Could only get 10-15 inch of Hg. This work better but not really securely attached so I added a small piston pump now I get 28-29 very solid nothing moves with a 4 inch chuck. You do not need to use the set screw hold the adapter to the hand wheel the vacuum hold it just fine at 20 inches. In fact long before I could generate enough force to hold the bearing in place the set screw created a vacuum leak and distorted the race and making the bearing bind.
