>Good for you Bill! I seldom allow chucks to be used in my classes, unless it's an advanced class.

Recently, A guy told me that not using a chuck in bowl turning was like not using a table saw for flatwork....Ridiculous!

>Some one refered to NASCAR. In NASCAR they have a saying, "If you ain't cheating you ain't trying."

I use a laser and a caputred tool hollowing rig. I don't think it's cheating. I also don't have cramps in my arms and back any more. I also use a bowl gouge, a chuck and HSS tools. I don't consider them as cheating They are like power stearing and power brakes on your car. Would you rather do with out them because some one thinks of them as cheating.

NOT ME!

I`ll second that!

My mom won`t let me hang out with him anymore,I have to tell her I`m going over to Jack`s shop(she always checks my pockets when I say that).

LOONG - I don't understand this

>very much. It sounds like we have several definitions of 'cheating' and several aspects, i.e., cheating the art/craft or cheating oneself. It seems this is the aspect over which folks are disagreeing most. My handy dictionary reads that cheating is "to deceive by trickery, swindle"..."to mislead, fool". So, to suggest that using any technique whatever is cheating...well, that just isn't true. Perhaps those folks are looking for a different word. Now, onto the issue of cheating oneself (which is what RonZ was talking about). That is a matter of personal opinion. Personally, I have no interest in the experience of doing things the old way (no offense with the word old). I started with a chuck and am now starting to use glue-blocks...not because I care about the earlier days of the craft or because I want to learn anything - I just have some wood that I can get the most out of this way. I don't even care about techniques, tools, metal types....I care about the product. I have a coffee spoon that is one of my favorite pieces. I made this out of a tree branch with a drill and sanding disc. At the time that was the only tool I had. I went through a ton of sand paper and sanded a branch all the way down into a spoon. Jimmy Hendrix taught himself to play the guitar - he played it upside down (high/low cords swapped)...I wouldn't suggest he should learn any other way. So, the product is what matters to me - get there however you can - you are not cheating yourself out of techniques/experiences/learning. One day we'll have some other device and everyone will be screaming that we should learn to use lasers 'cause that's how the old timers did it.

>I got into making the captive systems because LOML has autheritise (SP?) in her hands and can't turn with a gouge for more than 15-20 minutes. She can't rough in the pieces at all. I do the roughing, then she does the shaping with the captive rig. She does bowls, platters and hollow forms. If someone considers that "cheating", and some of the "art shows" do, them thats fine.

I don't think it has anything to do with weather the pieces are "art". That to me is a well designed and executed original piece. Copies arent no matter how well made.

My use is mostly deeper hollow forms where I don't want to mess with the leverage. I also use a micro set (1/4" dia. cutter bars) with laser to do hollow balls for ornaments. It's faster and these are either gifts or for sale in the $30-40 range so I want to do them quick.

I only go back 30 years when I turned in highschool and you had to put wax on the tailstock center as it didn't move. I guess Oneway got these in overstock as they are now selling them as safety drive centers. =o)

>Hi Russ

I have turned enough in the way of hollow forms so that I do not think I will be surprised. I even agree on the thick/thin analogy to a point, but that point would be one of relativity. I have seen people argue about the difference between 1/8" and 3/16", whereas I think it would be more like 3/16" vs 1/2". Actually one of my interests now is in turning some urns on spec for the pet cemetery up the road. They will need to be on the heavy side. No one wants a piece where they are going to have to worry about Rover getting out one last time!

I know about the brutal part too. When I did that one big funeral urn a few years ago, my poor little arm got all beat up. But as far as throwing, tools will bend or break before I am thrown - it has happened!
