I finally did it

Well I finally did it. I have to tell somebody. I ordered a new powermatic 3520 lathe from Osolnik Machinery yesteday. It will be shipped to me on Jan 3 since I will be gone for the next few days. I had been lusting after it for a year, had the ok from my wife and everything but I guess I just felt guilty spending that much money on myself. I have been using a delta midi lathe for 3 years and thoroughly enjoy making bowls, pens, anything that is round. Three things pushed me over the edge, I counted and I have sold 22 bowls in the last month or so for christmas presents. Second my son and I got two pickup loads of walnut and ash logs last weekend and I can get a lot of real nice blanks out of them that are way too large for the midi. And finally I got $900 from a settlement on a class action lawsuit that was unexpected and all I had to do to get it was fill out a little paperwork and send it in.

Now I have to make some major moves in my shop to get room for all of this. It probably needs cleaning up anyway. I will have to make some mobile bases for a jointer and belt sander, etc.

And finally, most of this wouldnt be happening with out all of the knowledge I have picked up by reading all of the posts on this forum. I dont post a lot but do read it religiously. Thanks to everyone.

Looking forward to Christmas and the first week of January. Jared

Congrats!

>Hi Jared,

Those mini latehs have a way morphing into much bigger lathes : ).....I think it's all a part of an evil scam by the lathe makers!

Enjoy your well deserved new lathe. You'll love being able to spin bigger bowls!

Now we can only hope you`ve been good enough that Santa will bring a digital camera so you can post pics of all the new and bigger stuff coming out of the shop.

Merry Christmas to you!

>Congratulations, Jared. I saw Mike Schwing's Powermatic, and it is a nice little beast!

One thing, though, that really jumped out at me from your posting:

"And finally I got $900 from a settlement on a class action lawsuit that was unexpected and all I had to do to get it was fill out a little paperwork and send it in"

How did that happen? I "invested" in several companies in the 90s (my timing was perfect--I caught the bubble just as it burst, and rode it all the way down, doing additional buying in some case to cost-average, and thereby lose even more money!). I filled out several forms for class action suits against many of these companies that were guilty of fraud, and the settlements I have been getting are more in the nature of the $53 we just got from Lucent! In many cases, the settlement was a discount on some accessory for some equipment that entailed your spending more money, and which you did not need in the first place.

You'll have to let me into your secret! :-)

class action Long

Hello Dinyar: This is a little different sort of thing that I collected on. I farm for a living and raise corn and soybeans. [a side note to this is that it gives me all winter to fool with my wood working] A few years ago a company sold seed to a few farmers that was genetically modified to repel a certain insect pest called corn borers. The grain from this seed was not approved for export or human consumption at the time of planting but the company anticipated that it would be approved by harvest time. It was not and never was approved for any use except livestock feed in the united states. The grain was supposed to be segregated and feed only to livestock in the US. It was detected in some taco flour in Mexico and some other places. It was never proven to be harmful to humans, it was just not ever approved for use. The farmers that planted the seed were compensated immediately. I did not plant any of it but because of the bad publicity surrounding the whole thing, the corn market for all producers was depressed for a period of time so I was compensated a few cents a bushel for each bushel of corn a sold in that particular year. I lost more money on my sales than what the lawsuit gave back to me but at least it was something. This process has been going on for several years and is finally done. I am just glad to get what I did out of it. It was very easy to become a member of the class but I know that a lot of farmers did not know about it or did not take the time to fill out the paper work, it was basically just free money to me with very little work involved. The only other time I collected, a few years ago each of my family members, 4, got about $15 cash back on the music CD price fixing thing. It pays to read the newspapers. Jared

>I'm amazed to hear that anyone other than attorneys actually made some money on a class action settlement! I hope you haven't spent it before the check arrives! Good luck with the lathe- it's a good investment and pays many dividends over a long period of time!

I have the money in cash form. The settlement was in the form of a cash card from bankone. However, I did not receive one to start with, called the company and they sent me a replacement. Then when the statement came, they took a charge of $25 for mailing a new one to me. I intend to get that back eventually. I am sure the lawyers got most of the money though. Jared
