I had to agree with the others. The finial didn't quite go. If you can take a look at the way Cindy Drosda does finials for her vessels. They are great. Personnally I always have trouble with finials as well. I think exotic woods make better finials. I don't know why. I also try to make them thin and delicate unless they are the handle for a box lid. I just finished a box that sold the day I finished it. I made 3 finials and lid tops before I got it the way I wanted.

>Hi Jen
Check our Cindy Drozda's finials. She makes a nice finial:
you can see some examples of her turnings at:

Stewart Mortimer also does some nice finials. In fact the British tend to do well at finials.
Good Luck

>Cindy Drozda is featured in the AAW 2004 Symposium video set. You might find that usefule if you wish to pursue that area. I thought she did more scraping and sanding than cutting but whatever works, especially if you fear the skew [my friend]. =o)

>First of all, I probably have no business criticizing such a nice piece or the one who did it; however, I will offer some general comments. That is a very nice piece. For finials to look their best, they have to be done very well. Because of their small size, there is little margin for error. Edges and v-cuts have to be crisp and well-defined. Beads and coves have to well-shaped. Shapes are very critical. Finials should be well-sanded. There should be no tool marks or rounded over edges. Finials are much like ornaments, in that errors in shape or execution become very evident because of the small size. I find finials and ornaments much more difficult to do well than larger pieces because of this. As for the lines around the vessel's mid-section, I might have tried finer lines or even none at all. Very nice piece any way you look at it.
