New Hollow Vessel w/PIC

Jennifer@Indy.USA

>Hello Everybody,

Well here is my latest hollow form. I turned this from a piece of Big Leaf Maple that came from a vendor on eBay.

It's approximately 14" tall (including the finial) and 5" diameter. The walnut finial is removable and the inside is finished as well. I'm not one for making finials, in fact mine are very crude. I thought I would probably end up making about half a dozen of them before I got one that suited me, but this was the first and only one. I see many things about it that I would change or would like to change let me put it that way. I would love to take a finial turning class! Who's teaching one?!

I finished it with two wipe on coats of Velvit Oil and then buffed it with the white diamond and carnauba wax wheels.

This one went to a very dear friend of mine for Christmas who has always been a huge inspiration to me and always convinces me to get in the shop even when I have those blah phases of not feeling very creative. Of all of the pieces that I have ever given as gifts, this one probably meant the most to me. It was priceless. I think they liked it :) I really felt the true meaning of Christmas when I gave this gift and it reminded me of why I love to turn wood into pretty things! I urge everyone to turn at least one thing this year and give it away! It feels GREAT!

I'd really like to hear what you think of this one so I'm going to tell you that I'd like to hear your comments and critiques. I'll put my thick skin on and be grateful for your responses.

Happy Holidays Everybody!

Thanks for taking a peek.

Love the form

Mike Schwing from Md.

>..and good thing the finial is removable. I don't think it matches in form/shape, style, or skill level to the rest of the piece. (you said be tough)

Keep practicing with them. I have a whole box full of finials I hate, and eventually I find a way to return them and put them to use, now that I have some finial turning skills.

That is a pretty big hollow form - sure takes a lot of time, and it was nicely done. I don't think I could bring myself to put those grooves in one of my pieces, but it adds a nice touch, I must admit.

>Very Lovely

I have to agree with Mike the finial doesn't work for me. I think it the way the two meet, it looks like an afterthought. Can you show a a pic without the finial?

>I think that both pieces look wonderful unto themselves. I must agree that that finial dosen't quite fit the piece, but on the other hand I think it is a great looking finial, and that you don't need a class to make them.

Really not to crazy about the grooves in the vase either, but hey, that's me. Overall tho I think that you did a wonderful job creating this piece, and I'm sure that the reciepents will cherish it for years and years.

Got to agree that giving something nice does indeed invoke a wonderful feeling. I recently sent an Islander something as a thank-you gift for a favor he had done me, that had I not owed such a great thank-you I would of kept for myself. However in my mind it is so nice and it thrills me to no end to have given it to him. check on the Handtool side today and tomorrow as it is to arrive in his mailbox either today or tomorrow.

I missed you yesterday. I swung by your place around lunchtime (had to stop in BR). I have a chunk of Birdseye in my trunk with your name on it.

Probably swing by sometime tomorrow (Fri).

Great looking piece, BTW.....

Crossing My Mind

Jim Shaver, Oakville Ontario

>Hi Jennifer,

Many things cross my mind when I see your turnings. I pay so much more attention to the details you have tried to improve on in your turnings and I constantly see them change and grow with your talents.

One thing that never changes though about you is your huge heart, to think that you reached out in your skills to make something new, pressing your limits, and then gave it away as a gift, well young lady, there are no words of critique from me other than to say never change and keep on your path, I see nothing but humble greatness for you in your futurewe are all blessed to have friends out there like you.

Take care,

Jim

>Jennifer, I like this one very much. Your form is excellent. The person who received this must really treasure it, and the thought that went with it.

As others have said, the finial isn't quite right for it. With the detail work on the rim of the vessel, it works very well without it. However, a vessel like this does work with a finial. The first change would be no detail work on the rim. There's already enough detail in the finial. The finial is quite a bit too large for the piece. I have that problem myself. I've turned quite a few pieces with finials, and after looking at it have made the finial smaller. In fact, more than once I've re-turned the finial twice to make it smaller. It wants to appear quite delicate and not overpower the piece.

Having said all of that, I think that it's a lovely piece.

I know what you mean about giving away pieces that you like. I've done it myself many times. Some to people who I've met on the web but never in person. I really enjoy doing it.

>Hi Jennifer,

That's really lovely. I love the collar treatment at the top of the piece. The whole body shape/collar really works for me. To be honest, I could take or leave the finial. I've only done a couple of pieces with one and mine tended to be too small for the pieces. I like the shape of yours, but it might be a bit on the biggish side.

Your friend is very fortunate to receive such a gift. It's funny you should mention this today about giving away pieces. I have a friend at work who wanted to buy a bowl for a friend for a Christmas gift. I took a few to work for her to choose and it was clear to me that there was one she really liked for herself, but there was one she thought her friend would like better, so she bought that one for her friend. I was literally remembering what you had recently said in a post about "letting bowls go" so you are not constrained by having your old pieces around so I gave her the one she was eyeing for herself. I really didn't think it was a big deal, but she seemed to be really touched. Seeing the smile on her face, heck I'd have given her both of them!

Thanks for the pics, it's always nice to see what you've been doing.

>Well it's unanimous.....a smaller finial gets the vote. I probably should have turned a few more just so I could have seen what another option would have looked like. Next time I will do so!

Thanks for looking at my latest and thanks for all of your honest comments. I do respect and appreciate them!

>Jen, I like it. The form is just right and the finial---well----I can't say I dislike it. One time I will look at it and think it is just right and then again think that maybe just a touch too much. Crazy as it seems it appears to be related to my expectation of it, not what it really is. I guess the eye of the beholder really applies here.

>Hi Mike,

I appreciate your comments. I'm glad you were candid! It really helps me to see things I don't at first. I hope I take these responses and make mental notes and hopefully improve where I need to. What I need to do is practice my skew skills and get over my fear of it!

Thanks again.

>Thanks Don.....you're too kind...I kind of felt the same too. It sat on my display shelf for about a week....and I'd look at it and think it was fine...and then I'd look at it and think...should I re-do the finial? Oh, well. I'm pretty proud of it and it's new owner is delighted....and that is all that matters I suppose.

Thanks for your very kind post : )
