I spray nitrocellulose lacquer. I like to use McFadden's Guitar Rubbing Lacquer, but also like Behlen's Stringed Instrument Lacquer just a much and it is easier to find. I had sprayed Deft Brushing Lacquer for quite a while, but it takes longer to dry, does not build quickly (less solids in it) and seems to shrink forever. Sam Simpson (Finishing chatroom) turned me on the Behlen's Stringed Instrument Lacquer when I visited him down in Houston a few months ago. It is formulated for wood that moves alot more than, say a table, etc, just like our bowls do. I then met a local guitar maker, and he turned me on to the McFadden's. The McFadden's customer list looks like the Who's Who of guitar makers. Both the McFadden's and the Behlen's get hard much faster, which allows sanding days sooner.
My sprayers (2) are el cheapo. I got a 1 pt siphon (reservoir on the bottom) touch up sprayer from Lowes for about $60 (Harbor Freight has one on sale for (19.99) and a top reservoir sprayer from Harbor Freight (currently on sale for $39.99. Both work just fine. The nice thing about clear lacquer, is you can leave it in the spray gun all the time, and it is available whenever you need to shoot it. I clean the guns about once every two months, just because I get tired of the gunk on the outsides.

If you decide to start doing lacquer, email me and I will give you a few hints about shooting in humid conditions.
