First of a New Batch

Mark Kauder, Phenix City, AL

>Here is the first of 5 bowls, of five different woods, that I started about a month ago. It is 10" in diameter. High gloss lacquer finish. The woods are Zebrawood, Maple and Bloodwood.

I before it was finished last week, I let my wife take it in to work, and it sold. She said she could have sold it several times over.

As always, critiques welcome.

Outstanding my friend, just outstanding.

>Hi Mark,

Your attention to the grain on the side pieces is wonderful. I prefer less color contrast in segmented pieces and you have a winner in this one IMHO. You are doing remarkable work. It is a pleasure to see your turnings.

To think that I shook your hand and then washed my hands and lost all that great Karma. Makes me feel like I saw a pile of burls going up in smoke.

Only two chess pieces to go in Longview, WA.

>I`d buy it.

Something about this piece than I REALLY like.I`m not usually taken by segmented work but this one just grabs me.I especially like the simple design in the contrasting band. You`ve got a winner there as far as I`m concerned my friend.

>The short answer w/o pictures is:

laminate a Bloodwood strip to a wider strip of Maple. Then cut the resulting laminated pieces at an angle leaving mostly Maple. Then square the ends of the resulting parallelogram creating a rectangle or square. Then cut the squares into the necessary wedge and glue them up.

Thanks

Love the combo of the woods. The bloodwood and maple accents are perfect. But what really gets me is the shape and finish. You nailed it!

I hope one day I can develop the patience and skill for segmented turning.

Great job. Or should I say great fun as I don't consider woodturning work.

The part I like best in this piece is the wood grain. It seems to come and go and come back again. It reminds me of soft sedimentary rock walls I have seen in some of my travels. Water erosion cuts through the stone to reveal un even layers or streaks of light and dark.

When I look at it my mind gets lost and finds peace .

From the design of your detail ring, I'm guessing you probably have a second bowl in the works with the bloodwood and maple reversed. Am I on the right track?

>It's not only hard to find, but expensive as the dickens.

If you laminate a 3/4" board of maple to a 3/4" board of bloodwood, cut into strips at 55 degrees, reassemble the strips without flipping and then rip it down the center (slide/flip), you'll get your pattern, but you'll also get a reverse of that pattern for another bowl.

I like your design, so if you haven't patented it, I may make one myself - with the proper acknowledgements and royalty payments, of course.

>I told you a year ago to buy a Kauder vessel while you could still afford one. There are a couple other guys I see here that are coming on strong too. Thanks to all the input from all the turners on WC I think people are getting there quicker now than when I started. Sometimes just one little bit of info or just a small critique can really help one to progress. Way to go Mark!
