Carole, yea, a lathe can cost ya' some buck to be sure, but as has already been said there are worse things you could spend your money on, and not get half as much satisfaction from.
I built my lathe years ago from plans that was put out by WOOD Mag, and still I ended up dumping &700 into it by the time I bought chisels, face plates, too rests, etc, etc. don't regret a dime of it tho. Ned to buy a good chuck of some type, but gads, the price on them is just so outrageous that I haven't done it yet. Finally fired up my lathe after a 6 year hiatus and dang if the 1/4 hp motor didn't give up the ghost. Haven;t found a replacement at the flea-markets yet, and a new 1/2 hp goes for about $120 out the door. Dang money sucker.
