>Carole,

You forgot to factor in the round trip cost of the Ches Bay Tunnel trip to attend the monthly Tidewater Turners meeting on the third tuesday of each month (except Dec) where you can see demonstrations of just about every turning technique, rent turning videos cheap, share experiences with over 100 fellow turning enthusiasts and sometimes get some good spot discounts from our hosts Bill and Heather Caillet, owners of the Woodcraft Store at Janaf Shopping center in Norfolk.

>The best part is that within six months you are going to want a bigger lathe and it will have a bigger spindle, so new chucks, etc. You either figure out how to make jigs and stuff or you do it like me, and just spend money! :)

>Yeah, Bruce Hoover inforemed that I needed to do that. That is a $50 trip for me (not including what I give Bill C after perusing his shelves...I spent $1200+ there on his opening day) and I don't like to drive across that bridge at night, so I guess I won't make it. :-(

>Just wait until you drop $5000 on a big lathe. Then you have a couple of hundred on a chuck then $400+ on a hollowing rig. Then....................................................................................................................................................................................................It only gets better or worse depending on how you look at it. You may even drop $10,000 on a band mill like Barbara Gill.

>Got a chain saw (which I am scared to death of), got a lot of sharpening stuff, got a lot of finishes. Dunno what the problem with denatured alcohol is or what you use it for, but there is plenty of it here. Am I supposed to stock up or something?

What part of the Shore are you in? My wife has kin in Birdsnest, Eastville, Treherneville, etc. Anyway, they give you a round trip discount on the Bridge tunnel.

>I am north of there...up near Onancock. I don't know what the heck the same-day round trip is now. They reduced it from $20 to $14, then they were talking about going back to $20. Got fed up with the polticos and quit reading about their machinations.

Been thru the fishing thing!

Carole in VA

>LOL One time we figured out approximately how much the fish cost us a pound. By the time you did, boat, motor, insurance, fuel, tackle, license, and two new props (from my ex not having a clue where he was going) we could have been eating lobster and steak for the rest of our lives!

The lathe is a slippery slope....

Bobby Wisdom

>I remember someone on the Pond told me that the lathe was only a small percentage of the turner's arsenal, and 4 years later I understand! Next problem, when you are really "hooked", is the rest of your power tools will only exist to support the lathe! (have you priced the lathe chucks yet?)---Have fun, and only buy a tool when you see or are shown the need. It will save you from wondering years later ----"Why did I waste my money on _____???"---Bobby

Barry Turner

>Let me put your new hobby into perspective for you. Priced a new bass boat, motor and trailer lately? Maybe $10,000 to $15,000. The object of all of this is what? To catch bass. (Or whatver kind of fish you fancy) You catch fish, then you eat them. Then what do you have? Nothing, except for a few memories and a bunch of payments on the aforementioned boat, motor and trailer.

Spend 1/10 of that amount on a lathe, a chuck and some tools. Get some free wood. Turn a few bowls and you've got instant heirlooms. Now, did you really pick and expensive hobby? You be the judge. It's all a matter of perspective.

Down Payment

Jorge Castaneda

>Carole,

The lathe is just the down payment, now you will be paying installments until you say: "enough is enough", then you will start making your own, and that is without the chain saw, truck to cart wood, etc, etc. : )

Congratulations, welcome to the fun!
