How can you get lost in Longview, WA?

Dave Smith, Longview, WA

>Hi Mike,

Alcohol is flammable but not as bad as gasoline. My wife puts up to 25 gallons in our garage every night. Seriously, read the container information and look up the MSDS for denatured alcohol. If you are not comfortable with using that much alcohol in your shop then don't do it. Several people have stated they will be putting the container outside or in a detached shed because of their concerns. I don't blame you for your concerns. I am really paranoid about linseed oil. Nearly every shop fire I have read about was started by the improper disposal of oily rags.

I use Schwans ice cream containers for soaking bowls. If I remember right a 1 1/2 gallon container will accommodate a 8" diameter bowl. They come in sizes up to 2 1/2 gallons. Just don't try to empty too many containers too fast. Ice cream headaches are murder. FYI, Schwans vanilla ice cream and IBC Root Beer make the best home made floats.

Re: The bridge led to nowhere :)

Mike Rubes, Apex, NC

>Hi Dave,

Thanks for the information. I will definitely give this a try. I hadn't thought about the gasoline. I keep a can of that by the chainsaw in the shop and no fires so far, so the alcohol shouldn't be any worse :)

I agree about the IBC Root Beer. I'm not familiar with the ice cream, though, I'll have to look for that out here.

About that bridge :) To make a really long story short, it was my first time in the Pacific NW and we were driving from Portland to the coast. The guy who gave us directions said "Take the scenic route up through Southern Washington and cross the bridge at Longview". He didn't mention that the bridge across the Columbia apparently closes at 9:30 PM. We got there at 9:36. Bummer. Took us a bit to get back through Longview and find our way on to the coast where we crossed over to Astoria. Now *that's* one big honking bridge! It was our first day of what turned out to be an awesome two weeks in that part of the country.

Thanks again for the information, I've got some wet maple logs I'm going to try this on!

Mike

Looking forward to heading back to the PNW someday from Apex, NC

>Dave,et al, Thanks for your research and wonderful solution (pun intended). My own experiences with LDD and boiling have had mixed results; boiling leads. So, I will use your system today for the first time, and wanted to thank you for your efforts, and those of your fellow researchers. Phil

You Forgot The PowerPoint

>Hey Dave,

Wanna silence those critics? I can whip up a presentation for ya with some nifty 3-D graphs and snappy bulleted lists. Then you will be an "expert".

Seriously, let non-constructive criticism roll off your back. I know and greatly respect you and some of the other folks who have seen benefits to this process. My own little experiment with the process sure made it worth more investigation to me. I am sure it has merit, much more so than the soap soaking method which has never produced results for me. I know you have been constantly analyzing this process since sometime before 11/13/2001, because you e-mailed me about it on that date.

This is wood turning, and it should be fun. God bless the folks we have like Steve Russell who will boil 500 bowls and produce fairly exhaustive studies. But the Steve's are few and far between, thankfully we have a lot of folks who constantly try new things and post their results.

With school I have had to essentially take a year off from turning, but I am a more knowledable turner today than I was a year ago because folks like you post such great information here.

Keep the faith buddy and keep us informed...

David

Only 3 months to go...

Your post and email made my day

Dave Smith, Longview, WA

>Hi David,

First let say I have a tremendous amount of respect for you and your decision enter the nursing field. One positive from your schooling is that your Poowood is still brand new since you haven't turned a ton of shaving on it yet. Best wishes to you and your family.

I figured you had forgotten our discussion on alcohol soaking bowls three years ago. Your early input encouraged me that I was on the right track. It is good to have non judgmental friends to discuss crazy ideas with.
