The ones on the left were my latest batch of hand mirrors. Made almost entirely on the lathe except for some carving.

This Bowl is Japanese Zelkova. Hardest wood I have ever turned... like concrete. Did it in a friends unheated and unlighted shop where my lathe had been stored... December 1999 Christmas Eve for a gift. Had my number three son sitting on the lathe to keep it from walking out the door. Have not turned since.

Too old and sore to learn no more...

This is my first "real" bowl turned from pear wood back in May of 2001. I actually use this bowl just about every day. It holds my keys and watch on my dresser (not good for much else!).

Here's one I'd like to think of as one of my "best".

It's cherry, with maple and ebony segmented rings. I actually cut the bowl, then added the segmented inner ring and glued it back together (matching the grain pattern of the solid wood). Then I added the segmented ring up top.

This is my first bowl. It's more of a shallow plate really, but it got me hooked. It's about 6 inches across and made from a walnut cutoff:

This is not my most recent piece, but it is still one of my favorites. I've kept very few of my own pieces, but I did keep this one. It is a natural edged Lignum vitae piece. The brown sapwood has turned really dark in the year since I did this one:

I've turned one other piece with lignum vitae and really love it. I've got a hunk of log left that I've been hoarding until I come up with the right project for it.

Again, neat idea for a thread. I've done some hollow form stuff as well, but don't have any pics of that stuff.

I'm sitting here wishing I'd have seen this thread when I was facing my first few turnings. I think it would have made me feel much more at ease with my skill set at the time. Sometimes I think new turners (like me recently) come here and see folks' best work and think "oh my gosh, I can't possibly post my work here" or "I might as well give up, I stink compared to these folks".

This thread would have gone a long way towards encouraging me, had I needed it.

Don't know if I have posted this pic before...it represents 100 years of turning in my family.

The lamp was done by my Grandfather in 1902 or 03. The ashtray holder in the middle was done by me..my first ever turning..over forty years ago.

The bowl on the right was the first piece I did after my course this time last year. The segmented bowl was my first attempt at that last Christmas.

Since then there have been many "minis" Most of you have likely seen them in my "Mini" gloat in a previous posting.

My very latest bowl is in the next posting.
