buffing speed

>Yesterday I tried for the first time to buff a lacquer bowl.....With horendous results. I burned thru the lacquer in miliseconds, pulled the lacquer into huge piles, ok, so this is a test bowl, I spend the rest of yesterday wet sanding the mess back into some resemblence of decency. Today I will be shooting another coat of lacquer on it.
My assumptions are that one, I didnt let the lacquer dry long enough before buffing, and two that my buffer speed was set too high.
At what speed should the buffer be spinning, guess what I really need is what surface speed it should be at, I have 3 different buffing wheels and they are all different sizes.
