>You generally cut on either side of the pith so that there is not a complete growth ring in your bowl blank. Usually about a two inch width will do it. On the other hand, if you cut 2 inches on either side of the pith you will have a 4 inch thick slab with the pith in the middle of it. This can be quickly removed on the band saw and the remaining pieces are essentially quarter sawn.
