An 8 X 10 photo, scissors, and marking pen are a substitute if we don't have an editing software that can do this.
There are many other benefits from taking a photo of our work at several stages during the progress of its turning. The photo image lets us look at the work in a normal upright position and cut away the background clutter or the lathe. And, the 2-dimensional flat image accents all of the errors in the shape and curvature, and makes it easier to see what corrections have to be made.
A sheet of flat black paper as a background makes it easier to see the curvature of the work while turning and taking photos.
We might accomplish the same things by putting the background behind the piece and standing across the room from it. But, the digital photo is easier to use, a better visual tool, and we have the ability to make changes to the form.
