Slat and Pepper mill set

Chuck Ludwigsen

>Hello all,

I'm looking to make a couple sets of salt and peppermills as gifts at the request of SWMBO. I can find peppermill mechanisms in all sizes ranging from 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 12, 14, 18, and 24". I can only find a saltmill in 7". Is this normal? Is it possible to use a peppermill mechasm for rock salt?

Thanks for the help.

Chuck in Memphis, TN.

>You *could* use peppermill mechanisms, but only for gifts to people you don't like. Bruce is right, salt will corrode the metal. Packard Woodworks has saltmill mechanisms in 6", 8" and 10" sizes.

Salt and Pepper mills: Thank you

Chuck Ludwigsen

>Thanks folks. After posting that, I found the other sizes at Packard as well. I appreciate y'all setting me straight on not using the peppermill hardware on saltmills. Wouldn't want anyone getting sick from something I made.

We ended up settling on the 7" mechanisms from Woodturners catalog due to price.

>Todd,

Packard Woodworks offers deluxe peppermill hardware in 6, 8, 10, 12, and 14 inch sizes as well as deluxe salt mills in 6, 8, and 10 inch sizes. That like will take you to the online catalog section.

I have not seen kits larger than 14" and have not seen salt kits larger than 10". If I do, I'll post a link.

>Todd and all:

Check out Chef Specialties for your salt and pepper mill parts or complete mills. They seem to be the suppliers to some of the catalog places.

800-440-Chef. Their website is http://chefspecialties.com

From my experience you won't find kits/parts on their website so ask for 'Metal part price list'.

Their complete SALT mechanisms only go to 10" but the square shaft is the same as in their pepper mill so I suspect you can just order the shaft to whatever length you want up to 24".

They also have a brochure and pepper mill drawings but you have to ask for them.

Hope this is of some assistance.

>You can also buy the shaft material and make your own to any length you want, thread one end and hammer the other end over to shape, most local steel supply houses will have the steel.
