>Mark Good job. No Great job. I think segmented turning has to me more than just a bunch of wood put toghether. It needs shape and good lines and the contrasting wood has to work well with the shape. You did both well.

As you noticed glossy black thing are really hard to photograph. Try covering part of your top panel with black paper or cloth to change it's shape. You will see whatever shape you create refected in the piece but sometimes you can create a shape that is more pleasing. It requires a lot of playing. Usually just making the top light look thinner helps.

was the piece already built when you used the Ebonizer. I was just thinking that this solution doesn't change many woods so you could feasibly turn the whole piece and then ebonize. If you chose your woods carefully it would only affect the ones you want.

I had trouble with the ebonizing not going very deep. Even too much sanding went through the color.

>I sanded, then wet the wood to raise the grain, then sanded again. The ebonizing was the last thing I did before shooting the first coat of lacquer. In my build up, you cannot see it, but there are two layers of dyed black veneer between the Walnut, and the Maple Layers. This gave me a barrier to work with. I was careful and could work right up to up to, and even touch the veneer, w/o risking the Maple. It is a good thing the ebonizing is not thick, because I got a damp finger print of the solution on the Maple, but was able to scuff it off with 400 grit.

Once ebonized, and shot with the lacquer, I had to be very careful not to sand through the lacquer to the wood. While leveling, I errored on the side of thick layers of lacquer, and less sanding then I otherwise would, Until I was confident that there was enought lacquer between me and the wood.

Lacquer will melt most of the time when you sand with the lathe on.

All the sanding was done with the bowl parted off. All sanding was done by hand, piece in my lap - usually in front of the TV at night.

The form is great, the segmentation is used tastefully and with restraint, and I very much like the way the minimum and maximum diameters (aside from the very bottom), occur at the segmented bands. I am curious to know whether and to what degree the inside is finished. Does the sanding and/or finishing extend far below the neck?
