Actually I'm in the midst of house cleaning, dropping unproductive (for me) email groups and online forums (to say nothing of getting rid of an extra old car, motorcycle, bunch of tools, boxes I've been saving to ship them in, books, ....). There's way too much duplication between WC and another group I play in, which is also full of self-congratulatory tool purchases, so I might be able to get it down to 4, 3 of which have so little traffic I could probably just check on them twice a week. Kind of clearing the deck before restarting the workshop build, turning some of this stuff I've been hoarding into cash, blah, blah.

So, I take it you are quite active in numerous forums, too?

BTW, it's not a "marking knife". It's a dedicated "dovetail marking knife".

Personally, I just use a stanley knife, and have learnt to allow for the 1/2 blade thickness offset (not a lot) from the pin wall to the marked tail.

With any mark and DT saw (with set) you make a judged allowance anyway.

It just LOOKS like a chisel, but it began life as a steel trowel, and it is a knife. So, no, I did not spend hours and hours grinding down a chisel to make it! Pictures below.

Pam make a comment about Tage Frid's use of a hacksaw blade when marking out half-blind dovetails, and I'm sure that this was at the back of my mind when I made this knife. I must try it out this way.

I didn't know Rob was a rep for LN. Call me stupid if you like. And maybe its unfair, but where I come from, we call stuff like this a "conflict of interest". So is it a how-to video with tons of product placement or is it just an ad? Before this thread, I had a hunch and felt kinda bad about it. Now I see my hunch was justified.

I don't agree with everything he does, nor necessarily his tool selection, but I do believe him to be a thoroughly honest man, in spite of being a salesman.

I don't want to put too fine a point on this. I'm not RC's judge. But if it were me, I would have disclosed that I was a LN distributor before the "Bench Planes" video.

I can imagine this becoming a very controversial thread. I'm sure there are people with very strong feelings on every imaginable side of this issue. I'm sure they will all make good points. But I'm censoring myself out of this thread. I'll catch up wih you all on the next one!
