Honour

Jim Shaver - Oakville, Ontario

>Hi Lyn,

You captured it perfectly...I am sure the folks at LV are nodding thier heads up and down after reading your post...we all have it in us to show that type of honour....it's called the High Road... it's the path that we need to stay on,

take care,

Jim

Re: I hold several patents

Todd Stock

>If you are saying that I can cobble together a copy of a patented widget from Rob's catalog for personal use, you are probably correct in thinking that it would be unlikely to provoke legal action short of, say, submitting the design to FWW as a tip, or something equally stupid.

This is a very different issue from the one at hand, which is the nature of the 'clarification' offered by the editors of FWW after publishing a tip that was so obviously a rip-off of an existing, patented device.

Finally - and an entirely separate issue - I have to question an editorial policy that would encourage the use of this type of crutch to support wobbly technique in a magazine supposedly devoted to fine woodworking. That said, I'm waiting to see if my construction article on an MDF garden bench makes it into one of the spring issues...think I've got a winner.

Is the side bar...?

>Actually it`s a new approach to dealing with glue squeeze-out.

Smear it and the rest of the contents of the can on the termite barf(aka MDF)as a waterproof finish.;^)

There is a parallel discussion taking place

Bruce, a MN Galoot

>on the FWW Knots discussion board. Some of the posters there don't know what the fuss is all about.

Lyn, you would all do us a favor if you would post your response on that board as well.

>I've been watching that thread myself. Ignorance of intellectual property and patent law is rife throughout the world, Bruce. Many people seem to think that because something is 'out there', on the internet, magazines, television, etc., it's fair game. It's not, and there was a discussion on a similar topic on this board two or three weeks ago. Slainte.

>I'm aware of those discussions, and I agree with your position. My point was specifically to suggest that the Knots thread would benefit from Lyn's discussion of "honor."

>Bruce,

I don't sign on to that group, and wouldn't be following it to deal with replies. Might it work for you to post a link at the FWW site to my WC comments here. If not, you are more than welcome to copy my entire comments and post them at that site.

Thanks
