>Let's see...for starters, take a gander at the frog ramp...which plane is more likely to experience stress cracks? Which blade is better supported by the frog and body casting? These are pretty subtle improvements, but they somehow manage to manifest themselves in overall performance.
(You might want to pull the frog on a 604 to see what I'm talking about...)

>I really have to admit to remembering the LN planes I've examined as actually being a bit better finished then the one in your photos...When you said it is a "First 100" was it some sort of pre production run, and if so do you think that explains it and were later ones better done?.....Todd
what's that saying about the bedrock?

>As far as making improvements than YES thay have.
Did you not see this statement in my last past?
Sure, all this translates into better performance, but as I asked "Dollar for Dollar.................. $500 for a LN #8 vs a $100 vintage #8 hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm that a $400 difference, which is alot of green, which for $400 I could buy a vintage 3,4, 4.5, 5, 5.25,5.5,6,7,and 8. Now, don't get me wrong I like LN's, but when it comes down to the best value for the dollar Vintage wins hands down, except for the outrageously priced speciality vintage ones. i.e. $1200 for a vintage low angle jack, $1000+ for a #1, etc, etc than LN's easily become the best $to$ value.

The Type 7s were not the pinnacle of Stanley production technology, but surface roughness is about as good (or bad) as the frog on a #4. Although Stanley did a nice job on the Bedrock cosmetics, the frog on the ones I've seen could use some lapping to get some decent bearing.

No - the comment was more generally meant for the group. I think we still have four or so folks involved.
Got to looking at my Bedrock handles, and they are all Brazilian. I wonder how many of us are doing the necessary paperwork when our planes cross international lines. Last time I checked, CITES documentation is a minimum of $50. Let's hope cheap rust stays that way.

Now you've gone and introduced evidence!
