DARN! PopWood errror

Joe Shelton

>Popular Woodworking (a very good magazine) has an article by Frank Klaus this time, about dovetails. Bear in mind that Frank is a prominent member of my personal 'pantheon'.

His article presents his precepts very well, and compellingly. I personally buy into Frank's technique. And I know that some don't. That's OK.

But, amidst all the beautiful photos of Frank's procedure, there is a drawing purporting to show his sequence of saw cuts for the pins that is hopelessly wrong.

If you read the article, and I certainly hope you do, ignore that damned drawing. It's misleading (plain wrong) and I'll bet Frank didn't draw it.

Hope this doesn't come across as a flame. No intent to savage the magazine, or any of the responsible editors.

Also hope the error doesn't wrap any unaware dovetailers around an axe handle.

>Joe,

What's wrong with the drawing? It seemed to follow the text quite well in the issue I recieved, at least the way I read it, and it followed the sequence in his video, too.

Again, not flaming, just puzzled.

Cheers!

There's always hope

>Joe,

The only difference I can see between our drawing on page 48 and the sequence of sawcuts shown on page 49 is that the drawing starts the cut sequence on the right side of the board (from the operator's perspective) and the photos show the cut sequence starting on the left side of the board.

And I can see no reason why it matters which side you begin from. The following cut sequence shown in the drawing and photos is the same (as far as I can determine). Essentially, the drawing is a mirror image of the photo sequence. Follow the drawing or the photos and the result will be the same.

In fact, I've driven into work today to dig up Frank's original drawings that we based ours on. He gave me two drawings. One starts the cut sequence on the left side of the board. The other starts on the right. Both follow the same sequence of cuts and offsets.

If I'm missing something here please (anyone) chime in and clear my muddled head.

>I originally saw this technique in one of the books by Roy Underhill. I was never aware that Klaus did it this way. Klaus relates his experience with the Guatamalan woodworker who also used this technique and thus confirmed his method's viability. I believe St. Roy was showing this as one that was well known and well used by earlier American craftsmen- another proof of its acceptance. I have done it this way for about two years but use it for dovetails on things that don't need to look perfect. It also seems to be faster to gang cut tails and then measure pins. The symmetry is better.

Hijack again -- impatient for issue

>Usually my Pop. Wood. comes before it appears on the Newsstand. This one hasn't. I just saw the current issue in the supermarket. Looks like a great issue! Now if the mailman would just hurry up!

>Chris,

I'm glad it wasn't just me. The drawing makes complete sense to me. It's actually cutting dovetails to fit like that the first time I have problems with, but then I haven't quite completed my "15 years of practice" yet.

Cheers!

>Hey, Chris. Thanks for responding.

A mirror image is, in itself, a big difference between any two graphic devices, and I maintain that the drawing does not show the technique Frank uses and espouses.

Did you find the drawings Frank did?

>Joe,

I have two drawings from Frank in his own hand. One shows him starting from the right. The other shows him starting from the left.

Frank was perfectly comfortable with our drawing and signed off on it personally.

>Well, thanks for your extremely diligent responses.

Obviously I'm splitting inconsequential hairs with my criticism, and I retract my assertion that the drawing is "plain wrong".

Lest I haven't already made the point clearly enough, I have very high regard for Popular Woodworking, and am glad that I subscribe to it. I learn a lot from it, and from your writing.

Please continue your good work.
