Usually on the low bench I use higher angles for thicker boards (closer to 70 degrees for 8/4 hardwood) for the the most efficient cut. Likewise with ripping I use a range of angles depending on species and thickness. A flat cut leaves each tooth in the kerf for a longer time resulting in clogged gullets; a more vertical cut gets choppy in a thin board. On the low bench you can also use both hands on the saw if you are getting tired.
