>I don't get it. How will bidding change if Ebay changes their rules so that auctions end at 15 minutes after the posted ending? It will still be a timed auction that has a defined endpoint. Bidders will just have to do some simple math to determine the "real" endpoint. Or am I missing something about the suggested change?

>I believe what we are talking about is extending the auction to a few min. or so after the last bid. for example auction is set to end at 5:00 and a person bids at 4:59 the auction will now end to 5:01 and if sombody bids again befor it ends the auction goes on for another 2 min....If another people keep bidding the auction could be extended for a long time...just like a live auction. I would imagine most auctions would only go on for a short time while everybody got in thier bids if they got extended at all ....Todd

>It's just has to be used in the initial 6 months after it gets used once it can set a life time. it's that first use that counts. For the average person it is suposed to be a 1 year rule but I bring home more stuff than most people so I cut the time in half. As for them drill bits or any thing else that come in a set you only have to use one for the entire set to be safe. and to top it off it is just a guide line to keep clutter from taking over. I was just told today at lunch that the truck load I took to auction won't be listed for two weeks because they have to much junk to sell. So I have 15 planes setting at the auction house along with other goodies.

>So would e-bay's auto bid thingy still work in this scenario? Would auctions need to end when folks were available to be on their computer?

For that matter, do items currently sell for more when the auction ends during the hours when most people (and snipers) are on the computer, as opposed to the early morning, or work hours?

Luke, already understands there is more than one time zone

>I could see how you would like that as a seller Todd. But, that would be bad for bidders like me. I bid my max up front and let the chips fall where they may. Extending the auction would either allow people a longer time to outbid me or run up my winning bid higher. I think a lot of buyers would take a walk after a few of those experiences.

>The basic theory is that you keep repeating what's been successful (i.e. makes you feel good and survive). So if you've previously felt very good about buying certain things at a certain time (or not), you'll likely repeat (or not). It would take a lot of self-knowledge and discipline to break out of a pattern.

Interesting question about bugs and designs. No one has a pre-amphibious brain, everyone has a primitive lizard brain, so it's not that (I'm assuming here that creationists have already opted out of this conversation). Not being a primary researcher in this field, I honestly don't have an answer. But if you think about how people behave, it does seem to explain some aspects. For example, doing things for short term feel good even when you know that long term it will contribute to disaster. It's like the cortex that informs you about the likely future is ignored.

I'll certainly keep an eye out for bug-like things in the marketplace, see if I'm attracted to them. Kind of reminds me of the research that cockroach killer companies did 20 or 30 years ago. One company came out with the bait trap approach that killed a whole nest/colony, only to discover that most women really liked killing roaches directly, one by one, with a spray. I'm not one of them, far prefer putting out little traps that kill around the clock with very little mess, and these days little sirens that annoy them so much only the deaf ones invade. However, I get joy from trapping a big roach under a glass on the odd occasion they show up, actually enjoy the chase, then watching them die slowly, hoping I haven't trapped a pregnant one.

>That's my sentiments as well Don. I simply don't like to put my highest bid "out there" right off the bat. Just seems wrong somehow. Coarse, there have been very few items come along that I "vowed to make mine" either. Used to upset me a bit when I got sniped for $1 at the last second, but now I can't even remember what the items where that I got sniped on. In the end it's only stuff anyhow.

I did once get royally ticked because what I think was some sniper program kept outbidding me to the point that it went for more than what I was willing to pay/felt it was worth, and starting making higher and higher bids, just praying that I'd get outbid, which I did. I didn't get the item, but I sure made the the SOB who did pay for it. Guess that was quite irrational behavior, but it felt good at the time. I don't do that anymore. Got to thinking that it might of been a Fellow Ponder (this was back in the days of BP)and then felt bad.

I still don't like snipers, but I don't let them upset me anymore either.

>Is funny but I just got back from an auction where there were probably easly 500 plus people some coming from as far as Maine and Fla. and don't recall any of them saying they were upset or were going to take a walk because others could out bid them if they bid more then they did or could run thier bids up...Hey this is what an auction is about!....I really don't think Ebay unless for tecknical reasons should be any different. Remember the reason for an auction is for something to get sold by people bidding on it. Having the auction extended would accomplish this and the Ebay auction just like the live auction would end when people stopped bidding...how could this be wrong?

Again i get quite a few emails from people for one reason or another gets sniped at the last second or couldn't bid and are very upset to have lost out.I am sure if they had the extended auction rule these people would have had a better shot at it and would have been happy. To say that you would be upset if ebay had an extended rule because you would be beat out by other bidders really proves that you believe other bidders would think it would be to thier advantage for ebay to have an extended auction rule....If the auction wasn't extended these bidders you think wouldn't have gotten what they wanted....you would have! ....Todd

>To a point I see your point Todd, but dang it, the way I see everybody has a fair shot as it is fully posted when the auction ends. What I do is put an item that I am interested in into My E-bay and check it daily. If the item goes out of my price range I let it go, if it dosen't than I make my bid. sometimes I get outbid and sometimes I don't. Sure, I understand that what you're saying is that a bidder should put in the highest amout that they are willing to pay for an item, but truely let's face it, when it comes to e-bay buying I'd say that 99.999999% of it is impulse buying so folks tend to put in a high enough bid to be the High Bidder, than think on it a few days if they are willing to go higher if they get out bid. I'd also dare say that most of us don't have a high amount of disposable income to be impulsing buying off of e-bay, but we do it anyways. I know that I've bought some stuff that I could of lived the rest of my days without just fine, and I'm sure I'm not alone eh gang?

I guess it just comes down to what side of the coin your on(hey, that a good pun, unintentional, but still a good one)eh?

With that said, I guess that's there's no point in us fussing amongst our selves how it is/how'd we'd like it, as I really doubt that e-bay really gives a flyin' hoot one way or the other. What are they selling now, I heard it's at around $1000 per second! Can that be right?

>I understand that Todd, but those items aren't available for bid for 10 days either, they are brought out and bidding begins and ends fairly quickly. Those in attendance have but a few minutes to make a bidding decision. You should be able to decide how much you want to bid by the end of 5, 7 or 10 days.

Roaches

Bill Houghton, Sebastopol, CA

>we're digressing seriously here, but I do recall with a certain thrill the roach, during my one and (I sure hope) only sojourn in a house with roaches, in Michigan, that I killed by sprinkling the little b@#$#d with Ajax powder. Took 1/4 cup of Ajax, but s/he eventually suffocated. I was really angry by then. I couldn't get out of bed in the morning without banging on the headboard of the bed to tell them I was getting up. They would all quit their soccer games and scurry to the corners, so I had somewhere to put my feet.

When I moved out of that place, my new housemates (who had all lived in or at least visited that house too) made me unpack everything on the front lawn and bring it in item by item after shaking it to see if there were roaches (literally - sock by sock). Fortunately, I was 19 and didn't own much. Now, doing the same would take me a solid week.

Nope, sorry, already added you to my ever-growing list. Rules state that once a name is added, it's permanent...;)

At least (if you were serious) one of "us" got it.
