Lie-Nielsen vs Lee: Popular Woodworking

Eric Hedberg

>Well, not exactly a battle of titans, but a really nice profile by Chris Schwarz in the latest issue. We argue the mechanics of planes here so often that I think we overlook the personalities that drive the designs. Chris gives us a nice compare and contrast of the two design philosophies and even ventures his opinion a bit. There is also some behind the scenes looks with pictures of Tom and Rob (If you ever wondered what they looked like). Worth a look as we all wait for the latest and greatest to arrive from both these companies in the coming months. Eric

>Now for the past few days (maybe more than a few), I've been reading posts about PW, while patiently waiting for the arrival of my copy.

One of the posts went so far as to say PW's mailout goes in stages depending upon what part of the country you live in.

I'll give PW until Tuesday or so, and then telephone or email them to see where my issue is!

Incidentally, I'm in Eastern NorthCentral Penna.

And a tribute to Chris as well

>I just got my copy of the latest issue of Popular Woodworking myself, and I agree with your praise of the plane article. The Wayne Anderson sidebar further adds to the in-depth perspective and expert commentary that Chris brings to the L-N/Veritas discussion. (I just uploaded an edit of Wayne's recent WC chat, by the way. Click hereto view the chat log.)

We run a bit late here also

Eric Hedberg

>I've been advised that part of the problem might be the growing ranks of woodworking enthusiasts in the postal service;-) Perhaps PW is becoming so popular that it has having difficulty passing through so many hands with all its tool shall we say "glamour photos". Eric

>Yeah, those two articles took me longer to read than I normally spend on a whole magazine! Great stuff.

>And don't forget the article Steve's shop. Wisht I had a tiled floor.

And the article on the Pt timer on plane making. Unfortunately my copy had "disappeared" so I cannot remember the name.

This was a fascinating set of articles.

The two on Lee and Lie-Nielson remind me of Hack's section on them in his book on Planes.

I found that to be enlightening...

But what you'd have to put up with

Bill Houghton, Sebastopol, CA

>Meeting those publication deadlines, the care and feeding of writers (whose egos exceed the, well, I'll stop now), trying to meet stringent budgets...

There's some negatives to balance getting to play with all those tools.

Right, Chris? Tell us it's not all fun. Lie to us a little, so we wage slaves out here don't get too depressed.

The truth...

Christopher Schwarz

>... costs exactly one beer.

Kind regards (and thanks for the kind words, all of you. Even though it might not look like it, I've been working on that story off and on for 12 months),

Chris
