Rip dovetail saws? Phhhhhtttttt!!!

There's a whole new mindset that Dovetail saws need to be sharpened RIP in order to give the best cut.
I think that this is bunk (shades of the tuning planes to 1 thou is silly thread.......)
Over a half inch thickness worth of wood I can't see it making any difference whatsoever whether the saw is filed rip or crosscut. The only thing is the manufacturers (LN etc) have convinced a *lot* of people to part with $135 to buy a rip dovetail saw.
"Ahhh, Mr Customer, it's not YOU that can't cut hand dovetails, it's your crosscut DT saw, buy one of OUR rip saws and your troubles will be over"
I refiled one of my old saws rip and compared it to a similar crosscut filed saw and I couldn't really tell a difference in holding a line, or clean-ness of cut.
P.T. Barnum would love the rip dovetail story (he'd probably have stock in WW magazines and LN too)
Ken.
