stopped dado technique
Jack Guzman from Maine
>I'm making a CD cabinet and need to cut 1/4" dados into the sides for the shelves. The dados stop just short of the front and I'm notching the front of the shelf to hide the dado.I'm almost finished but was wondering if there was a better way to do this.
What I'm doing is marking the outline of the dado with a knife. Then I take a wide chisel and chop a mortise the full finished depth at the stopped end. Then I place the toe of my back saw into the mortise and start cutting the knife line gradually lowering the saw to level until I reach full depth. Clean out with a 1/4"chisel and level the bottom with a #71.This method produces satisfactory results. The problem is with control. One slip and I mark the surface.I figure with a little practice and being careful I can avoid slips but wondered if my method could use improvement.Sam Allen mentions dropping the heel into the mortise in his book Wood Joiner's Handbook. I tried this and it made control even more difficult.
I though of using a block of wood as a guide but this would block my view of the line and I'd like to perfect my sawing skills so I prefer not using guides.
Any suggestions? Thanks---Jack
