In chopping out the waste between tails the waste has to go somewhere. Unless you remove most with a bowsaw, then as the chisel is forced downwards the waste is forced outwards...through the narrow space between the tails.
Why I thought this was more of an issue with the Japanese dovetail shape over a Western chisel shape I have no idea. Not thinking clearly apparently. :^)
Now that I see you can use these for chopping as well I may have to update my *need* list. ;^)
