Re: There is a difference

>I'm sorry you see it that way Gary. I wish you were not quite so strident in your tone also.

I guess I just don't see it your way and I and you don't see it mine.

On my word of honor, I had *NOTHING* to do with any posting about my item here. That's why I think it's not a promotion/sales post - because it isn't. That's just a fact. You keep alluding to the fact that it *could* be abused, but don't provide any proof that it has been abused. Further, I think you ignore that fact that the community in general will react and push things back into equilibrium pretty quickly if things do get out of hand.

(I also get the feeling that you believe that I *was* somehow involved in getting it posted here - and that's part of what is rankling you, but perhaps I read more into it than exists.)

It was someone noting, esp at the time that it was posted, that this was a way to get a LN 62, and all the irons you might want at a potentially pretty cheap price. (As of right now, it's still over $100 below the LN price, or $80 off the FTJ price. Since there's been quite a lot of bevel up vs. bevel down discussion, as I said before, I believe that is part of what made it interesting.

Anyway.

Have a nice Christmas.

Cheers,

Greg

>Gary, I'm posting here after posting just above.

Perhaps I'm too harsh on you. If so, I apologize.

If you go read some of the threads on bevel up vs. bevel down and LN vs LV I think you'll understand more clearly how in the "forefront" this item might be for some who have read frequently over the last 6-12 months.

Anyway. Welcome! I look forward to hearing your opinions and ideas on other topics. Perhaps we'll agree more in the future! *grin*

And like I said, Happy Holidays!

Cheers,

Greg

>I never meant to accuse you of being involved with the thread being posted. In fact, it never once crossed my mind. Like I said, my irritation at another forum is what mainly lead me to having this opinion, It's not just about this thread, or this auction or you or Lloyd.

Of course, the other forum it's a little more in the open. In fact, the hand tool forum is basically used as the fs forum some times. I can't tell you how many threads I've clicked on over there expecting something, then finding out it was someone selling something. Gets really irritating. This thread was pretty mild in comparsion to those. Again, the only reason I posted at all was because the issue was brought up.

Anyways, good luck with your auction. I'm sure you'll get most of your money back. LN's usually sell pretty well on ebay.

I get the feeling, when I contemplate posting just such a message, that it isn't quite acceptable so I refrain. The general attitude here is of tolerance with a high standard of ethical behavior. If that's unclear, try this,If you're not nice you don't get kicked out,you just don't hang out here for long. The only thing not tolerated here is personal attack.I think you'll like it here.Just my opinion.---Jack

Re: Cheap

Moses Yoder in White Pigeon, MI

>Good morning Greg :) You just called me a cheap bastard. I think about a hundred years ago those words would have led to a duel. But you don't owe me an apology, because I really am a cheap bastard. I wouldn't say that I'm proud of it, I just wear it like a badge of honor.

The reason I don't care much to see an in progress auction that I am interested in posted on a forum where two hundred hand tool fanatics will see it is that the tool will then more than likely go for much more than it's market value. For instance, at national tool meets if I saw a 605 body like one that was recently posted here as a joke I could probably get it for $15. After being posted here, the one on ebay sold for $35. About double it's real value in my opinion, but then I'm a cheap bastard.

The tool collecting world is not fair. I think I have done well with the abilities and circumstances I was given, but I am not a wealthy man. Other people are complete idiots, treat their families like trash, lie, cheat and steal, and yet have inherited millions that they can just buy whatever they want whenever they want it. This to me does not seem quite fair. I try to be honest and give a good days work for a good days wage, and yet I have less than many others who either didn't work a day for their inheritance or got wealthy by taking advantage of others. My only thought is that perhaps I enjoy my life much mroe than they like theirs. I am not complaining; I'm just stating the fact that life isn't fair, and that's why I am a cheap bastard and wear it like a badge of honor. Thanks for inpsiring me to focus my thoughts.

>Keep the LN for comparasion purposes against the LV? What cha' gonna do if for some reason you don't like the LV better than or as well as the LN? I'm not sure if you've ever tried the LV, so you really are taking a huge Leap og Faith on this, which, while it is known that rob makes a quality product that has recieved rave reviews may not be all that dangerous, but just in case why not buy the LV first, make your conclusions and sell the one you like the least?

Also, having both of them could make for some pretty interesting "shop talk" when a fellow Neanderthal drops by.

I am pretty surprised to learn that what you meant by "something finer" was a LV. I thought that you had stumbled into a old Spiers,or Matheison, Hotley or perhaps a Wayne Anderson, Steve Knight or something. Lets us know how it all works out for you eh?

>Moses,

Gotta disagree with you a bit on calling yourself a "cheap bastard". I used to call my self a cheap bastard until recently, but now I think differently, and am unsure what to call myself at the moment. I never cared much for the word "Frugal" so that is out.

In my new opinion and Cheap Bastard is one who can afford to spend more but flat out WON'T! Growing up in Maine, where even in the best economic of times money is tight I knew some folks who seemed really "tight", but now know that they where nothing more than cheap bastards.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not one for wantonly spending/wasting money, but won't deny my family or myself something that I/we really want based soley on it's selling price.

I'm probably not making myself very clear, so I'll try to illustrate.

Got a fellow DownEaster who snowbirds down here. He came to my shop and asked where he could buy a lawnmower cheap. Told him of a flea market vendor that I know of who always has some nice ones for cheap. So he goes and finds the guy, who had several nice Honda's for $25,and he wouldn't buy one. Instead he went and spent $12 for a POS one that needed a new blade, wheels are so wobbly it pathetic, just a POS in general, and is proud of the fact that he only spent $12. For $13 more he could of got a mower in 1000% better shape.

I thought that was bad enough, but than he has to go in for a root canal which cost him all in all about $1200. So now he's fiquring up that if every tooth he has would require a root canal than it would be cheaper to have them all pulled and get false teeth than it is to retain his natural teeth. Now that is a CHEAP BASTARD!

>Yeah Bob, lets hope, but it's no matter to me if he is because we're so much further down the slope than he. Seems like "Look Out Behind" realy applies in this case eh? ;~)

I can tell you a harlarious "whizzing In the Wind" story that one of my shipmates on Kitty Hawk did one night that would bring tears to your eyes, well at least it does mine. Than again, it might be one of those stories where you need to know the characters involed, and would of just had to of "been there" to really appreciate.

>My, this thread is just spinning out of control! :)

Yes, I was almost specifically thinking of you Moses - in a nice way though.

It's funny how we switch hit though. When, like myself, we're selling something, we want to make sure everyone knows about it - so we'll get the best possible price. But when we're buying - well you'd think someone killed your mum, should a link get posted. (Not thinking of anyone specific here...)

As for "fairness" in life. Life isn't fair, IMHO. But the pleasure/satisfaction for living a good and honorable life can't be bought, inherited or stolen. I think you rate highly there.

Finally, in the context I used it, "Cheap Bastard" was more a term of endearment than ridicule. 'Cause when it's me selling, you're a cheap bastard, but when it's me buying, I'm just being shrewd.

People do and think the oddest things.

Merry Christmas to all!

Greg

Re: Interesting Posts?

>Kind of hard to know what the thread is about without reading the title. Considering that title was:

Selling an LN LA Jack *LINK*

I didn't even have to click on the thread for someone to offer me a ln la jack. It was all right there in the title.

Again, I've only been here about a week or so, and as I have said time and time again, one of the main reasons I came to this message board was because I didn't like the way that fs threads were allowed to run rampant in the hand tools forum at a different message board. It just irritates me. I came here hoping it was different.

After seeing a "selling something" thread in the first week, why shouldn't I want to click on it just to see what the general consensus on the idea of selling stuff here is? If I click the link and find everyone saying "oh that's great, thanks for finding it... blah, blah, blah...", I think it's pretty safe to assume that it's allowed over here. In which case, I might as well go somewhere else right now, as no doubt it will probably end up being similar to the other forum. Instead I find discussion of whether or not it's allowed. I thought I'd just give my opinion. But I guess everyone else is allowed to participate in this discussion, as long as they aren't as opinionated as I was being?

By the way, I would have thought twice would have been enough, but apparently not. So for the third time... I RELENT!!! There's no need for anyone else to post telling me what I should or shouldn't do with regards to fs/ebay threads. It will only be beating the proverbial dead horse.

Anyways, feel free to not read this, even if you already have. Since you apparently think that I should be able to know to not read a title without actually reading said title, you must have some kind of magical powers to allow you to do the same.

>Oh, I've tried both. Have a friends LV sittin' in the shop right now. Have had it for at least a couple of weeks.

Both are nice, but I just like how the LV one feels and some of the details of the LV are better designed, IMHO.

I'm not at all "brave" enough to switch site unseen. (Even without having this friends plane, I did get to try them at the PDX wood-show, so I knew then that I was ready to jump ship on my LN 62. With the new smoother coming that will also use the same irons, and the jointer too, it just makes it that much more attractive down the road.)

Greg

>I'm not going to get into the ethics of posting a link to someones you know active ebay auction. Not my job to worry about that kind of stuff. But I don't really think when somthing likes this happens it makes the tool go for more then it's "Market Vaule" like Moses said. If it does go for more then if this hadn't happen[ it might and might not] it is still going for it's "market vaule" just that the market has been expanded by exposing more people to it.I have sold many tools on ebay and only a very small number have been bought by folks here on the list,[thanks to those that did buy them!] so don't know how much alerting the folks here to somthing really would make that much difference.Maybe the exception would be somthing on ebay that was misidentified so that "regular" ebay people couldn't find.Don't know..I think a 605 body if it has the frog would easly sell on ebay any day of the week for $35 and not just because it was posted here. Would be surprised if you could get the same at a tool show for $15 , my experance most tool show dealers sell stuff for more then they can get on ebay other wise they would be selling it on ebay.

As to money in the end I think It is really nothing other then perhaps an embarrisment that often holds many people back.Think the richest person I know isn't some high paid guy setting in a office but my friend that drives an old truck and lives in a cabin with no electric or running water, drinks "Non Taxable" liquor he makes and who builds Flintlock rifles by hand doing what he wants and loves......Now that is a Rich man ! Todd,.. who thinks he is a little bit "Rich" too
