Re: I thought....

>Oh I completely agree with not censoring posts. I just think there is a place for fs/ebay threads, and it's not the hand tool forum. There is a classified section. In my opinion, that is a much more appropriate place for it. At least then the people that would be seeing it would actually be looking to buy something.
In my opinion, the posting of for sale/ebay items in a forum devoted to the discussion of hand tools is akin to telemarketing calls or someone walking up to you on the street trying to sell you something. Especially if the links are framed as a "Selling something-something" thread. I go to ww'ing hand tool forums for the discussion of hand tools, not to be bombarded with offers for me to buy something. (thread title "Selling an LN LA Jack"... sure looks like an offer to me)
There was one time a couple of months ago at another ww'ing forum where there were 15 for sale threads out of the first 60 threads in the hand tools forum. Even though there was a forum explicitly for selling items. Could you imagine if 1 out of every 4th phone call you received was a telemarketing call trying to sell you crap? Or if 1 out of every 4th person you met on the street tried to sell you something? In my mind, it's very much the same thing, and is a pet peeve of mine. I could just not click on the threads, right? Then it wouldn't matter. Except that some of the threads looked to be legit topics, then ended up being a for sale thread.
While a situation like that very well might not happen over here, who's to say it won't. Certainly there is an opportunity for it to happen here. Over at the other ww'ing forum I speak of, there's even a message stating "As always, if you have tools to sell, please use the Tool Swap and Sell forum." But it clearly doesn't do any good. Considering that something like that can happen at a place with a message like that, one has to wonder what might potentially happen at a place that almost encourages the posting of ebay links.
By the way, regardless of how smart the users are on this forum, it would be very easy for someone to link there own items in this forum in order to generate more hits. Considering how apparently lax the protocol for posting ebay links is, it could very easily be done and no one would be the wiser. i.e. in the situation I presented above, all I would have to do is post a thread every few months (using a new identity) with a similar topic, and it would just be free advertising at, as you say, "the largest woodworking site on the internet." And considering how common reposting of similar topics are on internet forums, people would just write it up as "oh, it's just a beginner asking the same question that was asked a few months ago." Free advertising at the largest ww'ing site on the internet... can't beat that.
Anyways, I like this forum a lot so far. In addition to be a great source of information, people here seem to be very level headed, and open to discussion in a mature manner. The only reason that I even posted in this thread is that the issue was brought up and it's a pet peeve of mine that's been bugging me for a while. I'm not doing this as an intentional attack at Lloyd. I'm not trying to ruffle any feathers, and once this thread runs its course I won't make mention of the issue again unless someone else happens to bring up the topic again.
Sorry for the long-winded post.
