Bedrock 604C questions

Corey Megal

>I don't get my hands on a bedrock too often. This is the second one I've added to my arsenal. I found it at a flea market this past weekend. I believe it is a type 8. Corrugated. It has some pretty good surface rust and possibly some mild pitting, but really not too bad, also there is a small chip out of the side right at the front. So, here's my question, do I worry about maintaining the "collectibility" of this plane, or do I clean it up, make it pretty, and use it? Now, I'm not the type of guy to take it to a buffing machine and dip it in lacquer, but I do clean the rust off it using electrolysis and brighten up the brass a bit, use paste wax on it to prevent future rusting, and then use the plane. BTW $40 a decent price or not? I thought I did ok. Thanks guys, Corey.

>A chipped bedrock is not a collectable plane IMNSHO. There are hundreds of better quality units out there. Polish it, paint it,or japan it. Make it as nice (in your eyes) as you want. Then use the he!! out of it and enjoy the curlies. BTW that is a nice gloat. $40 sheesh.JR

>Sounds like a bargan to me clean it up and use the heck out of it. When it is all said and done you will have left it in better shape than you found it. The patina it will have will be yours.

I'd use it, and...

>YOU SUCK! A $40.00 bedrock! Double sheeseh!

Anyway clean it up and use it.

BTW...As others said, not a lot of collector value, but...If it doesn't perform well you can part it out on ebay and probably triple you $$$.

Did I mention it's got round sides?

>FWIW, I wouldn't. I might pass away tomorrow. And if my children then sell my stuff, I want the pool of potential buyers to include collectors.

I'd clean it only to the extent collectors would permit. Certainly short of electrolysis. Also short of wire bristles.

That's just me.

Best, Ted

>I always thought electrolysis was pretty safe, so what would I do to clean the rust off of this and keep it collectible? It's too late for this one, but I'm curious in case I run into this again. I'm a relatively young guy without kids so I'm not to worried about passing away any time soon. I'm much more of a user than collector, but I try to be a little sensitive to the collector's out there. Thanks for the differing viewpoint.
