>A froe blade act a chisel at the very start (1/10") of the cut, as a wedge for more or less its own depth (say 2") then as a lever for the rest of the way. Since the levering action is defined by the ratio of the length of the blade to the length of the handle, the depth of the blade is quite important.

When you're levering open a long split with a froe, you'll see that the "edge" of the froe never gets to perform any cutting - the edge will never touch the splitting point.
