Re: While we're at it - plane recommendation?

>I recommend a plane called a drawer bottom plane. You may have to order it from England. Its a wonderful little mini plough, with a single cutter (I guess you could make others, but why bother) and a fence like a moving fillester. 90% of my grooves are 1/4" wide groove, 3/4-7/8" in from an edge. That's what this plane does.

In truth, you could use a fixed plane like a grooving plane from a now divorced match plane set. The iron would be about the right width. You may have to change the fence slightly. Easy enough to do.

Otherwise, I recommend a wedge armed, un-handled english plough.

I don't recommend the Stanley #45. I think its blade adjustment/clamping mechanism is hokey. I had one, hated it, and couldn't wait to get rid of it. I think its an awful clunkly thing to use. I know others like them and find them helpful. I just wanted to provide you with another opinion.

>I don't know that I'm ready to get rid of my #45 yet, but I have been using a #50 more lately. I find the blade locking mechanism in the #50 more secure and it seems to support the blade better with the blade held on both sides.

Adam, I like your idea of using the plow (plough) for narrow grooves only, removing waste between grooves or next to a groove to make a wider groove or rebate. I think I will be using my #50 more for this purpose with the 1/8" cutter.
