Good day for the Hackman!!

Bob Hackett

>Just when I was lamenting the fact that I wouldn`t be doing any rust hunting any time soon(income=0 due to shoulder surgery)and some of the folks here were out and about the thought hit me to just go to the dump to get some kindling to get my mind off the finances.

I steered over to the metal pile and saw an old benchtop jointer laying there.Hummm, says I,that may be useful for scary sharp or something similar.I look and seems as though it`s all there except the gaurd and the cutterhead spins free too.I throw it in the truck and move around the pile where I see another dump hound has a late model craftsman TS he`s loading up.As I move in to investigate it becomes apparent that someone has emptied out an ENTIRE SHOP and left it here on the pile!Old Red(the other dump hound)has a TS,a large Craftsman drillpress w/morticing attachment and a 14" bandsaw in his truck, all late model stuff with some rust but still useable.

My take,2 Craftsman TS W/fences+miter gauges(one has a rolling stand and a working 1 HP motor),a Craftsman benchtop BS,A grinder arbor(wheels on each side, pulley in middle)And the Benchtop jointer(I found the gaurd so it`s complete). All old cast iron tools with only surface rust.I felt good enough to slap old Red on the back afew times and congratulate him on his find too(he helped me load my stuff up).

Now on to the handtools(you were wondering about the neander part weren`t ya?)2 braces(1 being short throw)that are rusty but everything works,2 big handfulls of augers, coutersinks, screwdrivers, etc to go with the braces.3 socket chisels(Red got the rest along with the planes),3 handsaws(Red took the good looking ones)half a 5 gallon bucket of bronze, brass, and copper hardware(planking nails, screws, lag bolts, etc)and A Chicago Pneumatic chatter gun(it works)w/tools.

I was so flabergasted that I almost forgot about the kindling. As I steer over to the wood pile I see that a local boatyard has just drove off.I had just enough room for the mahogany offcuts that they left. After I put the bigger stuff on the wood rack in the shop I still had enough to fill the woodbox to overflowing.SWMBO will be toasty at least thru the weekend and then some.

Oh yeah,I almost forgot to mention the 8ft cast iron lamp post that Paul the Transfer Station Technician(dump guy)helped me load after he finished petting Otis,my bench dog.The post is wicked heavy,it took Red,Paul, and me with my busted wing to load it.It says City of Bath-1875 on the base.LOML will find a suitable garden walkway lite for it I`m sure.

All this for ZIP-ZERO-NADA-FREEBEE as they say on Monster Garage.

Life is beyond good for the Hackster.I just can`t find it in me to feel bad about the planes I missed.I will go and see Red after I buff up those tablesaws though,I`m bettin` he`ll trade. He`s an electron killin` kind of guy.

>Congratulations on a great score Bob. A buddy of mine used to run the town dump a few years ago and he let out that he had a bunch of old planes he found, when he heard I was lookin for some.He said I could have them(around christmas time)but they were buried under a bunch of junk and it was a round tuit type thing. He don't know one plane from another but he said they were bench planes with two handles. So since then I've been waiting patiently for him to dig them out.I try not to think about it. After all they may be a bunch of worthless handyman's with plastic handles but who knows what people will toss out?---Crackerjack

Ahhhhhhh well then, Mystery solved

Todd O. Cronkhite Native of Maine

>There I was this afternoon out in my side yard working on my large chunk o' wood outdoor workbench just having a grand ol' time froing away at some pieces of wood that I diced off of larger chunks o' wood, when we had the strangest weather I ever did see in all me born days.

the sky kinda turned an off-grayish/blueish color and I thought to myself, Ahhhhhh here comes a short rain, it'll be good to get cooled off abit. After a few more minutes and no rain I look skyward again, and I notice that the clounds are kinda' all headed North in some type of swirly patteren, "strange thinks I to I, but hey, that's the weather for ya', so back to happily froeing away I go.

After I had completed froeing all the pieces I had to froe, I decide to crosscut off some more dices and as I lifted up my one man crosscut, I realized that it practically lifted itself, and that I more or less caught than picked it up. Hmmmmmmmmm thinks I to I, that's a bit odd, but ahhhh well, no matter, I must be hallucinating a little from all that sweting I'd been doing whilst froeing. So I starting happily sawing away, minding my own own business, having a grand ol' time, and after a few minutes I pause to wipe the sweat from me brow, and in doing so I happened to look skyward, and I noticed that all the birds seemed to be flying Northward in the same type pattern as the clounds. Hmmmmmmmmmm thinks I to I, they must be just playing around.

So I go back to happily sawing away, having a grand ol' time, minding my own business, and after a few minutes I have sawn completely thru the log, but the unsawn piece won't fall to the ground, it just sorta' hovered there, and if nothing else, seemed to actually rise abit. wow, thinks I to I, this is great, I don't have to bend over to pick it up and carry it to my froeing block, I just sorta' pushed it along thru the air and set it where I wanted it.

Fiquring that something is surly amiss, I stop to really look at things, and I notice that leaves, pine needles, small rocks, coke cans, and other bits and pieces of scatterd items lying about are either picking up and heading Northward in a swirly kinda' motion, or else they are trying too.

After about an hour, all at once, as fast as it had come, this strange weather was gone, completely normal again. I hated to se it go away so soon as I had wanted to dice of more chunks o' wood and just float them to my froeing block before it was all over, but ahhhhhhhhhh well, so it goes, all good things must come to an end eh?

So, all the rest of the day I had been puzzling over this occurance, I heard nothing on the radio about it, so I just dismissed as my imagination playing tricks on me as it is sometimes want to do and left it at that.

no here I learn what caused all this weirdness, it was BOB UP IN MAINE SUCKING LIKE NO ONE HAS SUCKED BEFORE!! ;~)

Good haul Bob, to bad you didn't get there a bit earlier eh? :~( That darn Red always seems to get the most of the goodies at the dump dosen't he?

Maybe Red is actually Redd (as in Foxx; aka Fred Sanford, that's S-A-N-F-O-R-D period).

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Cheers,

YOU SUCK HACKMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Two weeks until I have to start moving 4000sq' of shop and junk, (most of that junk)

Dump picking rules:

1, NEVER, bring home more then you bring TO the dump.

2. If it's a good day disregard rule #1.

If SWMBO doesn`t see you leave...

Bob Hackett

>There is no rule #1.Unless the kids rat you out.

I`ve found it`s good to become involved in what your kids are doing, that way you can bring back twice as much and blame it on them.

Scavenging?

Bob Hackett

>We Downeasters refer to it as "Taking personal responsibility for bringing recycling back to it`s grass roots origins".

Red refers to it as "Robinhood Recyling",that would be taking from the rich and giving to the poor.In Red`s mind there nobody poorer than him.If his truck(recently christened the "Rum-Ford")is any indication,he`s in the top three in Lincoln county.I`m betting he get`s Christmas cards rom the other two guys, recycled ones of course.

None of what he says is true!

Brian, Boothbay Harbor

>Hackman had a recent operation and is on medication which causes him to imagine things.

I live right in the same are and there is no "dump" or "landfill" for anyone to wonder about in this area.

There is not any reason for anyone to waste gas and drive here to find a dump.

The guy is making it all up..... That's my story, and I'm sticking to it! STAY HOME!

I`m a bit puzzeled here

Bob Hackett

>When the powers that be down at the dum..I mean the transfer station, decided that there would be no "grass roots recycling" because of liabilty issues and the possibility that some injured party would involve the town in costly litigation, why some of us just brought the subject up at the next selectmen meeting.During the discussion we talked about things like where the money comes from to run the facility, and who actually owns the land, equipment, and all the stuff dropped off there for recycling. We also talked about how if the employees of the town are allowed to engage in a grass roots recycling effort then everyone who pays thier wages ought to have the same privilages. We talked about what recycling really means and how best to accomplish proper recycling while making the most of the taxpayer`s(that would be us)money.

In the end,the powers that be found that they didn`t have as much power as they originally thought. One of them even got the chance to flex thier non-power in a new location and a new position. The selectmen allowed as how the grass roots recyclers had to sign a release from liability for awhile then dropped even that.

So what`s got me puzzled here is that you haven`t brought all this guarding the dum..er transfer station and no "grass roots recycling" things up at the monthly selectmen meetings.WHAT?you don`t have selectmen?Well just bring it up at the next town meeting. You know, the annual meeting where everyone from the town sits down and approves everything from the budget to well, everything else.WHAT??you don`t have town meetings you say?No wonder you have the mayor`s son-in-law gaurding the dum..er transf..whatever they call it down there.

town dumps(recycling facilities)

Jack from Maine

>I'm in a small town with not alot of trash volume to pick through but we get some treasures. The guy that's been running things for years got too old and his replacement is a man who knows the value of good dump pickings and makes good use of them.He built his workshop entirely from there.

It seems some people got sour grapes cause he was getting all the good stuff,so they passed a rule of no dump picking. That lasted several months but people finally lost interest in the issue and things are finally back to normal. The guy may get the good stuff but he shares.

Not much of a story but it's just a day in the life of a small town recycling facility.---Jack
