New Plane Announcement Coming...

Rob Lee

>Hi -

I've checked with Ellis before posting this (to ensure it fits posting guidelines....).

On Thursday of next week, we'll be putting up a new bench plane (link will

be on our home page). As some of you may have seen before, we like to have a

bit of fun pre-announcing new planes. We've done it twice in the past, (the

4 1/2, and the shoulder plane), and this will be the third one....

Normally, we only do this for a major announcement; one that we feel is

genuinely of interest to the community at large. I'm only posting this on

the WC board, as this is one of the boards I participate on the most, and

y'all deserve a "head's up" before the rest of the woodworking community.

Since I don't want to wreck the announcement - I won't answer any specific

questions about it....until next Thursday!

Cheers -

Rob

It Won't be in the Stores...

Rob Lee

>Jim -

This is just the announcement... we won't have anything for sale for at least one more month (I know there's a small pattern change underway).

What you'll see is a pre-production version only...which is why we're not mentioning it elsewhere... this announcement is just for the WC gang...

Appreciate the vote of confidence though....

Cheers -

>Ahh, but if you frequent enough forums, you'll know that Rob likes to give lots of hints.

He might have forgotten that he dropped a hint about the type(s) of upcoming plane(s) earlier this month on a certain Canadian Woodworking forum...

I'd post the link, but then figured I'd let those with enough interest sleuth it out themselves.

I can guarantee it's a genuine new plane, which will be on the market later this spring....with only a very minor (you won't really be able to tell) casting change.

>Dan, not to get into a terminology war, but I wouldn't consider a L-A Jack to be a shoulder plane. Anyway, the Lee Valley catalog states that the medium shoulder plane is just the first of a series of shoulder planes, so I don't think that's what Rob is alluding to. Anyway, all this speculation is good for a smile on a really dreary day here in Ottawa.

>Rob,

Perhaps you think none of us peek at other forums but I do. On Friday of last week, someone wrote in to a forum which shall remain nameless:

"Greetings all. I'm in the process of looking for a new low angle plane. The main use of the tool will be primarily shaving down end grain on finger and dovetail joints to get them flush. The two that I've settled on are the New Lee Valley low angle smoother, and the L-N low angle jack plane. I'm looking for opinions on what a few of the hand toolers in the group would go with. Price is somewhat of a consideration. The Lee Valley is around $160 and the L-N is $225. For what my intentions are, should I dole out the extra $65 for the L-N, or is the Lee Valley all the tool I'll need ? Looking for some folks to toss their $.02 around. Thanks."

To which you replied:

"Hi -

You may even want to wait for a new third choice...in the May/June

timeframe....

Cheers-

Rob"

Leaving rather large hints aren't we?

Yes....but

Rob Lee

>.. right now it's a horserace... I don't know which one'll hit the streets first (though I have a pretty good idea!).

Tomorrow we'll be deciding which one we focus on for the June supplement (mails May 10th).

Who knows - maybe we'll get really lucky, and have two!

>Sean, I was not actually referring to your guess of a low angle Jack, but to the posts up about talking about bigger or smaller shoulder planes. I got the response in the wrong place ;-) Sorry for the confusion. I would agree that a low angle jack is a bench plane.
